JCSU Sports Information
Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (April 11, 2015) – The Johnson C. Smith softball team split a nonconference doubleheader with Bluefield State, taking the first game 5-3 and dropping game two 5-1 at Biddleville Park on Saturday afternoon.
Leading 2-1 going into the fifth inning in game one, JCSU plated three runs after loading the bases following singles by
Morgan Hasty (Salem, Ind.),
Monique Jefferson (West Hills, Ca.) and
Maci Black (Greensboro, N.C.) reaching on a fielder's choice.
Melissa Vierra (Tracy, Ca.) drove in Hasty with a groundout to the shortstop to make it 3-1 followed by a
Cabrisha Anderson (Atlanta, Ga.) bunt single that scored Jefferson, making it 4-1.
Imani Scott (Atlanta, Ga.) provided an RBI sacrifice bunt, scoring Black to provide the 5-1 margin.
JCSU got strong pitching from
Victoria Lopez (San Diego, Ca.) the rest of the way, as Bluefield State never threatened again in game one. Lopez scattered four hits, only giving up one run while striking out four.
In game two, Bluefield State struck for two runs in the third inning, taking advantage of two JCSU errors, making it 2-0. The Blues' pitcher Rosanna De Vries was brilliant in the second game, carrying a no hitter into the seventh inning, leading 5-0.
JCSU would break up the no-hit bid, rallying to score three in the seventh inning, but it was not enough as Bluefield State would take the 5-3 win. De Vries mastered the JCSU batters, striking out 12 while only allowing two hits in the win.
With the split, JCSU now stands at 9-11 overall, while Bluefield State improves to 5-15. JCSU will return to the field on Sunday, April 12 for a CIAA doubleheader against rival Livingstone at 3:00 p.m. at the Jaycee's Optimist Complex in Salisbury, N.C.
