JCSU Football Hits the Road to Kentucky StateCharlotte, N.C. (Sept. 10, 2015) – The Johnson C. Smith University football team will hit the road, taking on Kentucky State this Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at Alumni Stadium in Frankfort, Kentucky.
JCSU is smarting from a 14-0 home loss to Wingate, where the Golden Bulls let three red zone scoring opportunities slip away, fumbling three times.
JCSU freshman quarterback
Jordan Lane (Charlotte, N.C.) threw for 192 yards on a 13-24 performance, without throwing an interception.  Lane's target of choice was junior receiver
Fred Scott (Stone Mountain, Ga.).  Scott hauled in five passes for 99 yards, including a long of 43.
Roderick Clark (Miami, Fla.) also had a productive afternoon as receiver, bringing in three passes for 45 yards.
JCSU had trouble establishing the run, only rushing for 31 yards as a team on 32 carries.  Freshman running back
Desean Binyard (Winston-Salem, N.C.) accounted for 44 yards as the Golden Bulls' leading rusher.
Defensively, JCSU senior linebacker
Austin Jacques (Springdale, Md.) started 2015 much like many of his 2014 performances, by leading JCSU in tackles.  Jacques managed 8.5 stops on the outing against the Bulldogs, with eight being solo tackles.  Newcomer
Carlo Thomas (East Orange, N.J.) also had a great outing, tallying 7.5 tackles as a defensive back, seven of which were solo stops.  Defensive lineman
Jamaal Tutt (Atlanta, Ga.) had 6.5 tackles, with five being unassisted.
Kentucky State enters the game after taking a 35-20 season-opening loss at FCS foe Hampton.
KSU fell behind 21-0 early, but stormed back, scoring 17 unanswered points to trail 21-17 after a seven yard touchdown run from quarterback Ora Johnson with 7:34 remaining in the third quarter.  Following a Hampton touchdown, KSU again clawed back to within eight points after a 33 yard field goal from Turner Warren at the 12:07 mark of the fourth quarter.  Hampton would put the game out of reach midway through the final stanza after a 55 yard touchdown pass, providing the 35-20 final.
Thorobreds quarterback Ora Johnson threw for 131 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 35 yards and another score.  Running back Kyle Jackson led the way on the ground with 93 yards rushing.  Defensively, KSU was led by Lydell Simon, who had a team-high 10 tackles while Nate Robinson had nine stops, two for loss.  Jermaine Graham had five tackles and two interceptions.
KSU kicker Turner Warren captured SIAC Special Teams Player of the Week honors for his performance against the Pirates.  Warren converted both his PAT attempts and connected on field goals of 30 and 33 yards.
