Box Score Fayetteville, N.C. (Jan. 16, 2016) – The Johnson C. Smith women's basketball team  could not overcome a poor shooting performance and 31 turnovers, dropping a 68-59 overtime decision to Fayetteville State at Capel Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Bulls shot only 27.4% (17-of-62) as a team and 56.4% (22-of-39) from the line on the afternoon.  JCSU got a game-high 18 points from Ashley Porter (Winston-Salem, N.C.), while freshman A'Diyah Ussery (Shelby, N.C.) had eight points.

The Golden Bulls were able to jump out to an early 6-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to a pair of
Ashley Porter baskets and a bucket by Quinesha Lynch (Rocky Mount, N.C.).  JCSU would then go cold, as Fayetteville State embarked on a 14-1 run over the remaining 6:29 of the first quarter to take a 14-7 lead.

All told, JCSU went without scoring for over five minutes before Lynch broke the drought with a driving layup that made it 16-9 with 7:14 to play in the second quarter.  JCSU would then get a three pointer from Asha Jordan (Monroe, N.C.) to pull to 18-12.  After a Bronco turnover, Jordan then connected on two free throws to make it 18-14 with 5:30 left.  The two teams would then trade turnovers before A'Diyah Ussery  canned a three pointer to bring JCSU within one at 18-17.   The two teams would then exchange leads, as JCSU took the 23-22 lead into halftime following an Amena Brent (Chicago, Ill.) jumper.

The third quarter started with freshman Je'Keyah McNeil (Fayetteville, N.C.) knocking down a free throw to give JCSU the 24-22 lead with 9:12 remaining in the third quarter.  JCSU would build the lead to four points, but Fayetteville State responded by taking a two point lead of their own at the 3:57 mark after a Courtney Best jumper.  JCSU would take the lead once more, 31-30, at 3:25 after the second of two Krista White (Dayton, Ohio) free throws.

FSU would take the 36-35 lead but Cierra Levias (Seattle, Wash.) would tie it up after she hit a free throw with 16 seconds remaining to provide the 36-36 score that would end the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, neither team could establish a sizeable lead, with the largest lead coming with 2L35 left when FSU held the 52-46 advantage.  JCSU would fight back to force overtime thanks to two free throws from LaTondra Morrow (Charlotte, N.C.), a three pointer from Ussery and a layup from Porter.  JCSU would then force an FSU turnover and had a chance to win at the buzzer, but could not get off a shot.

In overtime, FSU ran out to a 64-57 lead and JCSU could not recover, dropping the game 68-59.

JCSU stumbles to 11-7 overall, 4-3 in league play and starts 0-1 in Southern Division play.  Fayetteville State improves to 10-8 overall, 4-3 in CIAA play and starts 1-0 in Southern Divisional action.

The Golden Bulls return to Brayboy Gym on Wednesday night, Jan. 20, hosting St. Augustine's at 5:30 p.m.
