JCSU Women's Basketball Earns 64-48 Win over St. Augustine's

Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (Jan. 20, 2016) – The Johnson C. Smith women's basketball team withstood a hot shooting St. Augustine's team in the first half and took control in the fourth quarter on their way to an 64-48 CIAA Southern Division win at Brayboy Gym on Wednesday night.

Junior MaryAnna Moore (Laurens, S.C.) registered her third double-double of the season, shooting 6-of 7 from the field on her way to scoring 14 points.  She also hauled in 12 rebounds on the night.    Ashley Porter (Winston-Salem, N.C.) scored a game-high 21 points for JCSU on a 10-of-19 shooting effort.

Visiting St. Augustine's started hot from long range, as five of their first six field goals in the first quarter were from long range.  In the quarter, the Lady Falcons were able to build a nine point cushion at the 1:09 mark when Shakeisha Washington buried a long ball, making it 16-7.  JCSU trimmed the lead to 16-9 after Amena Brent (Chicago, Ill.) got a layup to drop with 54 seconds before the first quarter buzzer.

JCSU was able to make a move in the second quarter by going on a 10-3 run to knot the score at 19-19 after an Ashley Porter jumper.  JCSU then grabbed their first lead of the game at 23-22 on another jumper from Porter.  Following a free throw from senior Larryqua Hall (Atlanta, Ga.), SAU was able to tie it again after two free throws from Ashanti Reid with 13 seconds remaining.  Porter then stepped back and drilled a three pointer, her first of the season, at the halftime buzzer to put JCSU up 27-24 at the break.

The Golden Bulls took over in the third quarter, building the lead to as many as eight points at the 3:50 mark when A'Diyah Ussery (Shelby, N.C.) connected from long range after Krista White (Dayton, Ohio) delivered a pass in traffic.  SAU then got a three pointer from Shanika Harris to draw within 36-31 with 3:26 left in the quarter.  After a missed JCSU shot, Harris found her way to the free throw line to cut the lead to 36-32, but JCSU was able to bolt ahead by seven points once more at the 26 second mark after Asha Jordan (Monroe, N.C.) dropped in a layup to make it 40-33.  SAU got a Khadijah Payne layup to make it 40-35 at the end of the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Golden Bulls were able to build the lead to as many as 15 points thanks to a Moore layup at the 7:46 left.  The Golden Bull lead would balloon to as many as 17 points at 55-38 and the Falcons could get no closer than 13 points the rest of the way, with JCSU earning the 64-48 win.

In the loss, the Falcons got a team-high 16 points and eight rebounds from Shanika Harris.
 SAU falls to 3-15 overall, 0-8 in CIAA play and 0-2 in Southern Division action while JCSU improves to 12-7, 5-3 CIAA, 1-1 Southern Division.
