JCSU Women Completes Second Half Comeback to Down WSSU, 62-58

Winston-Salem, N.C. (Jan. 27, 2016) – The Johnson C. Smith women's basketball team erased a 10-point fourth quarter deficit to earn a CIAA Southern Division win over Winston-Salem State, 62-58 at the Gaines Center on Wednesday night.

The Golden Bulls improve to 13-8 overall, 6-4 in CIAA play and 2-2 in Southern Division play.  Winston-Salem State drops to 8-10 overall, 4-5 in CIAA play and 2-2 in the Southern Division.

JCSU's A'Diyah Ussery (Shelby, N.C.) was the leading scorer on the night, knocking down 16 points while hitting three from long range.  Senior Larryqua Hall (Atlanta, Ga.) just missed a double-double, finishing with 12 points and nine rebounds.  Amena Brent (Chicago, Ill.) rounded out the JCSU scoring, finishing with 10 points and snagging six rebounds.

JCSU struggled through much of the first quarter, only managing one field goal, coming at the 7:22 mark on an Ussery layup.  Quinesha Lynch (Rocky Mount, N.C.) added two free throws with 1:38 remaining in the opening stanza to pull the Golden Bulls to within 8-4.  Collectively, JCSU shot 1-of-9 (11.1%) in the first quarter to trail 12-4.

The Golden Bulls heated up in the second quarter when Ussery canned a three pointer to make it 12-7.  JCSU would cut the WSSU lead to 12-10 following a Lynch basket, but WSSU quickly responded by extending their lead to 21-13, forcing a JCSU timeout with

JCSU then went on a 7-3 run to close to within 24-21 at halftime.  During that span, the Golden Bulls got two baskets from Asha Jordan (Monroe, N.C.) a free throw from Ashley Porter (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and another three pointer from Ussery to close the half.

In the third quarter, WSSU went on a 13-4 run over the first four minutes to build the lead to 37-25, their largest of the game.  JCSU would

The Golden Bulls would take their first lead of the game at 52-51 after Ussery got a jumper to fall with 4:05 remaining.  The JCSU defense then forced a WSSU miss and would convert when
Hall boarded a Krista White (Dayton, Ohio) miss and got the layup to go while being fouled.  Her free throw would put JCSU up 55-51.  After another WSSU miss, JCSU would earn another trip to the free throw line, and White would hit a free throw to extend the lead to 56-51 with 2:04 remaining.

WSSU would get a late three pointer from Jasmine Carter with provide the 62-58 final.

JCSU will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 30 with a Southern Division clash at Shaw.  Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
