JCSU Women Drop 93-74 Decision at Shaw

Box Score Raleigh, N.C. (Jan. 30, 2016) – Shaw University had five players score in double figures and held the Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team to only 14.3% shooting from long range while forcing 25 turnovers to take a 93-74 win at Spaulding Gym on Saturday afternoon.

JCSU's Ashley Porter (Winston-Salem, N.C.) scored a game-high 25 points and six rebounds while shooting 9-of13 from the floor and a perfect 7-of-7 from the line while teammate Amena Brent (Chicago, Ill.) registered 11 points.

The homestanding Bears started off hot bolting to a 17-2 lead over the first 4:21 of the game.  In that span, Shaw's Fantasha Tyson had nine points on 4-of-4 shooting, forcing a JCSU timeout. 

JCSU quickly responded with a 12-4 run of their own to cut into the Shaw lead, making it 21-14 at the 1:22 mark after two Porter free throws.  JCSU would  get a layup from Jaylaan Dillard (Raleigh, N.C.) and two free throws from Krista White (Dayton, Ohio) to bring the Golden Bulls to within 24-18 at the end of the first quarter.

The game stayed tight into the second quarter, with JCSU drawing to within five points on three occasions, the first following a Larryqua Hall (Atlanta, Ga.) jumper with  6:50 left.  After two Porter free throws with 1:16 left made it 45-40, Shaw would get a two from Aaliyah Mercer, but
Quinesha Lynch (Rocky Mount, N.C.) calmly drained two shots with 1.7 left before halftime to bring the margin to 47-42.

Out of the halftime break, JCSU was able to draw to within one point when A'Diyah Ussery (Shelby, N.C.)  boarded her own miss and converted a layup to make it 48-47.  After another Shaw basket, Porter would knot the game at 51-51 with two free throws with 7:13 left in the quarter.  Shaw would then go on a 21-8 run to expand their lead to 72-58 by the end of the quarter, with JCSU's Amena Brent scoring the final basket of the quarter by knocking down a shot at the buzzer.

In the fourth quarter, JCSU would claw back to as close as 11 points at 78-67 thanks to another Lynch layup, but Shaw steadily rebuilt their lead to 19 points and never looked back, taking the 93-74 Southern Division win.

JCSU falls to 13-9 overall, 6-5 in CIAA play and 2-3 in the Southern Division while Shaw now stands at 16-5, 8-1 in league play and a perfect 4-0 in divisional games.

The Golden Bulls will now have a week off, next taking to the floor on Saturday, Feb. 6 when they host Fayetteville State for a 2:00 p.m. tipoff.
