JCSU Women's Basketball Drops 52-50 Decision to Bowie State

Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (Jan. 4, 2016) – Visiting Bowie State got a layup with 4.9 seconds remaining from Kiara Colston to earn a 52-50 win over Johnson C. Smith at Brayboy Gym on Monday afternoon.
JCSU got 11 points each from
MaryAnna Moore (Laurens, S.C.) and
A'Diyah Ussery (Shelby, N.C.). Senior
Ashley Porter (Winston-Salem, N.C.) led JCSU with 11 rebounds while senior teammate
Larryqua Hall (Atlanta, Ga.) had 10 rebounds and eight points.
Bowie State got a game-high 21 points from Kyah Procter. Teammates Kiara Colston and Ashley Jennings had 13 and 10 points, respectively.
In the first quarter, JCSU was able to jump to an early 7-2 lead after senior forward
Amena Brent (Chicago, Ill.) knocked down a soft jumper at the 5:52 mark. Bowie State would fight back, closing the gap to 9-8 with 2:25 left thanks to a Kyah Procter layup. Proctor would give BSU the lead at 12-10 with another basket with 12 seconds remaining.
The Bulldogs began to pull away in the second quarter thanks to an 8-2 run over the first four minutes capped by a Proctor three pointer that made it 20-12.
JCSU would close to 21-16 when
MaryAnna Moore connected on two free throws with 3:38 remaining. After a pair of Kiara Colston free throws put Bowie State up 25-16, JCSU got another Moore free throw and a driving jumper from
Quinesha Lynch (Rocky Mount, N.C.) just before the halftime buzzer to draw JCSU to within 27-19 at the break.
In the third quarter, JCSU was able to trim the BSU lead down to one by going on a 13-4 run to make it 33-32 with 2:39 left thanks to a
Larryqua Hall (Atlanta, Ga.) tip in. JCSU would tie it at 34-34 when Hall buried another jumper, but a free throw from Colston with 1:06 left gave Bowie State the 35-34 lead at the end of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, BSU extended their lead to 41-35 after a long ball from Proctor, but Ussery responded on the next JCSU possession with a three pointer of her own to pull to within 41-38. After a BSU miss, Ussery was able to hit a transition layup to trim the BSU lead to 41-40 5:46 remaining.
Ussery hit another three pointer, her third straight basket to put JCSU ahead 43-41 with 5:33 left
Following a JCSU technical foul, Bowie State extended their lead to 45-43 after hitting two free throws with 4:02 remaining.
After JCSU's Lynch was fouled on a put back attempt, she tied it once more by nailing two free throws at the 3:03 mark, but Bowie State responded when Proctor hit a jumper to provide a 47-45 score. After a JCSU miss, BSU's Kiara Colston missed two free throws, but the Golden Bulls could not capitalize, turning it over on their next possession.
Following an Ussery miss, JCSU's Porter boarded the miss and was fouled. She then hit one free throw to draw JCSU to within 47-46 with 1:20 left.
Bowie State's Ashley Jennings found her way to the line after a JCSU foul, knocking down one shot with 1:09 left to give the Bulldogs the 48-46 lead.
Bowie State would then get a steal from Jennings and she converted a jumper to provide the 50-46 lead. JCSU then got a layup from Porter to bring JCSU to within 50-48.
After a travelling call on the Bulldogs with 14.5 remaining, JCSU was able to get another layup from Porter with 7.9 left to knot the game at 50-50.
After a BSU timeout, Kiara Colston knifed through the JCSU defense and got a layup to drop in traffic with 4.9 seconds left to make it 52-50.
JCSU's could not get off another shot and fell to 9-5 overall, 2-1 in CIAA play. With the win, Bowie State improves to 8-3 overall and 1-0 in CIAA play
