Chowan Makes Comeback to Down JCSU Men, 73-71
Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (Jan. 6, 2016) – Chowan scored 48 points in the second half and erased a 15 point Johnson C. Smith lead en route to a 73-71 CIAA win in the Helms Center in Murfreesboro, N.C. on Thursday night.
The Golden Bulls had three players score in double figures as
Stedmon Lemon (Lithonia, Ga.) had a game-high 20 points and a team-high 8 rebounds. Fellow senior
Diondre Pratt (Morven, N.C.) contributed 19 points and seven rebounds and
Robert Davis (West Friendship, Md.) had 11 points.
The first half started off very competitive as the two teams battled through six ties over the first 12 minutes of play. With the score tied at 24-24, JCSU embarked on a 15-1 run to jump to a 40-25 lead at the halftime. During that stretch, sophomore
Malik Ford (Salisbury, N.C.) scored four points on two dunks. JCSU was able to shoot 57.7% from the field, going 15-of-26 including a 33% clip from long range, with two long balls coming from senior
Stedmon Lemon.
Chowan took their first lead of the game with 2:45 remaining when Andrew Lopez hit the second of back-to-back three pointers for the Hawks to make it 68-67. The Chowan lead would be extended to 71-67 but Robert Davis nailed a jumper and was fouled with 55.4 remaining. His free throw trimmed the lead to 71-70. Davis would earn his way back to the line with 24 seconds remaining and tied it with a free throw but Chowan's Kortez Smith hit a 18-footer with under three seconds left to go up 73-71.
After a JCSU timeout, Lemon's three pointer at the buzzer was off the mark and Chowan escaped with the win.
The Hawks had five players score in double figures with Kortez Smith and Jeremy Smith each scoring 15 points. Andrew Lopez and Marco Haskins each had 14 while Joe Goodwin scored 13 points in the win.
