Chowan Clips JCSU Women's Basketball, 68-60

Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (Jan. 7, 2016) – Homestanding Chowan University made an 11-3 run over the final three minutes of the game to squeeze out a 68-60 CIAA win over the Johnson C. Smith women's basketball team on Thursday evening in Murfreesboro, N.C.
JCSU had three players in double figures, led by
Quinesha Lynch (Rocky Mount, N.C.) with 14 points.
Ashley Porter (Winston-Salem, N.C.) had 13 points while
Asha Jordan (Monroe, N.C.) had 10 points and seven rebounds.
In the first quarter, the Golden Bulls went on a 12-0 run over the last 3:35 of the quarter to bolt out to a 20-7 lead. During the run, freshman
A'Diyah Ussery (Shelby, N.C.) knocked down two three pointers on back-to-back possessions. After baskets by
Amena Brent (Chicago, Ill.) and
MaryAnna Moore (Laurens, S.C.),
Quinesha Lynch hit an 18-footer at the buzzer to stake JCSU to the 20-7 lead.
Chowan closed the gap to five points after a Jordan Payne layup at the 4:35 mark made it 23-18. JCSU would then go on to extend the lead back to double digits after
Larryqua Hall (Atlanta, Ga.) scored to make it 32-21 with 1:51 before the intermission. Chowan then closed to within five points when 33-28 Shaikeyla Jordan converted a layup with 28 seconds left. The Hawks had a breakaway opportunity as time expired to cut into the lead further but could not get the layup to go as the halftime buzzer sounded with JCSU leading 33-28.
The JCSU lead swelled to 10 points at 42-32 after Lynch converted another layup but Chowan embarked on an 11-0 run to take their first lead of the game, 43-42 after Alisha Mobley knocked down a free throw with 3:21 remaining. JCSU would then respond with a 4-0 spurt of their own thanks to baskets by Lynch and
Ashley Porter that gave JCSU the 48-44 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Chowan was able to grab the 55-54 lead after Dhyamond Crenshaw completed a three point play by hitting a free throw with 4:54 left. JCSU would regain the 57-55 lead after a jumper from Porter with 4:27 left. The Hawks would then embark on a 11-3 over the final three minutes to claim the 68-60 win.
The loss drops JCSU to 9-6 overall and 2-2 in CIAA play while Chowan improves to 8-5 and 2-1 in league play.
