JCSU Women Claim Road Win at ECSU, 66-53

Box Score Elizabeth City, N.C. (Jan. 9, 2016) – The Johnson C. Smith women's basketball team used a key 16-3 run to start the second quarter while shooting 53.3% in the first half and cruised the rest of the way to a 66-53 CIAA road win over Elizabeth City State on Saturday afternoon at the R.L. Vaughan Center.
Senior
Ashley Porter (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and junior
Krista White (Dayton, Ohio) had identical lines, with each scoring 13 points and pulling down five rebounds. Fellow senior
Amena Brent (Chicago, Ill.) was the other Golden Bull in double figures, as she scored 11 points.
Quinesha Lynch (Rocky Mount, N.C.) led JCSU on the boards with eight rebounds.
After being down 13-12 at the end of the first quarter, JCSU's run began with an
Ashley Porter layup on an assist from
MaryAnna Moore. JCSU's lead would swell to 10 points when
Asha Jordan (Monroe, N.C.) hit a jumper that made it 26-16 with 5:20 left, forcing at ECSU timeout.
The Vikings trimmed the JCSU lead to 31-24 after a Jayln Brown basket, but the Golden Bulls went back up 10 points after a Moore put back a miss with 25 seconds left, providing the 36-26 JCSU halftime lead.
In the third quarter, JCSU went up by 14 points at the 6:53 mark after
Quinesha Lynch found Moore for the easy bucket. The Vikings were able to close to within eight points at 45-37 after a pair of Breona Jones free throws with 2:27 left.
Asha Jordan would put JCSU up 49-36 following a steal and layup. Jordan was fouled and converted the free throw to give JCSU the 50-36 lead at the 55 second mark.
Elizabeth City State would claw to within 10 points with 5:28 to play following a basket from Brown but JCSU responded with a 10-2 run to put it out of reach, capped by a Jordan layup with 1:50 left, putting JCSU up 65-47.
The win improves JCSU to 10-6 overall, 3-2 in CIAA play while ECSU falls to 4-9, 1-4 in league action.
JCSU will continue their road swing, playing at Virginia State on Tuesday, Jan. 12. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
