Box Score Chowan Takes 47-14 Football Win Over JCSU

Murfreesboro, N.C. (Oct. 1, 2016) –  The Chowan offense piled up 650 yards and held visiting Johnson C. Smith University to just 251 total yards, taking a 47-14 CIAA win in Murfreesboro, N.C. on Saturday evening.

The home standing Hawks (4-1, 2-0 CIAA) jumped on the board first with 32 seconds left in the first quarter when quarterback Randall Dixon connected on a 1-yard pass to Reginald Williams, taking the 7-0 lead. On JCSU's next possession, Chowan forced a Harold Herbin (Fayetteville, N.C.) interception, taking over at the JCSU 26-yard line.

After the turnover, Chowan needed just three plays to take the 14-0 lead, capped by 26-yard reception by Kaine Lombard with 11:53 left in the second quarter.

Following a JCSU punt, the Golden Bulls defense came away with a turnover of their own, when Joe Jones (Miami, Fla.) forced a fumble while teammate Kennan Jones (Orlando, Fla.) pounced on the loose ball at the Hawk 48-yard line.

The Golden Bulls were able to drive to the Hawk 20, but the drive stalled and a Matias Lambrecht (Venice, Fla.) punt was downed at the Chowan 9-yard line.

JCSU forced another Hawk turnover, this time after junior safety Carlo Thomas (East Orange, N.J.) picked off a Dixon pass, returning it to the Chowan 49. JCSU would again have a promising drive end when a fumble was recovered by the Hawks at their own 4-yard line.

Chowan took over but was unable to move past their own 21, taking the 14-0 lead into the halftime break.

Chowan then exploded in the third quarter, scoring three touchdowns in a four minute span to take the 33-0 lead before Herbin put JCSU on the board with a 1-yard run with six seconds left in the third quarter, making it 33-7.

After another Chowan touchdown made it 40-7, freshman Rathel Carter (Winston-Salem, N.C.) hauled in his first career score, a 13-yard pass from Herbin to make it 40-14 at the 8:21 mark. Chowan then capped the scoring, this time on a 1-yard Williams reception to provide the 47-14 final.

Offensively, Herbin finished with 140 yards passing on a 14-of-34 effort while throwing a touchdown and two interceptions. Tromecio Summers (Charlotte, N.C.) led the JCSU ground effort, rushing for 51 yards on four carries while Eugene Holmes (Columbia, S.C.) caught five passes for 73 yards.

Defensively, Desmond Taylor (Picayune, Miss.) led the JCSU cause with 13 tackles and a half tackle for loss. Thomas finished the night with nine tackles and an interception, his fourth of the season.

Chowan's Dixon passed for 381 yards on a 26-of-34 outing while tossing five touchdowns.

The Golden Bulls fall to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in CIAA play.

JCSU will return home on Saturday, Oct. 8 to host defending CIAA champion Winston-Salem State. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. from the Irwin Belk Complex.
