JCSU Football Visits Fayetteville State on Saturday

Charlotte, N.C. (Oct. 12, 2016)
– The Johnson C. Smith University football team will rekindle the long and storied rivalry with the Fayetteville State Broncos this upcoming Saturday, Oct. 15. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at FSU's Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium.

JCSU is smarting from a 15-14 home loss to perennial CIAA power Winston-Salem State last Saturday. JCSU spotted the visiting Rams a 9-0 lead, but stormed back thanks to a pair of touchdown tosses from quarterback Harold Herbin (Fayetteville, N.C.).  Herbin found senior receiver Rod Carter (Miami, Fla.) for a 68-yard touchdown to cut the Ram lead to 9-7 with 3:37 remaining in the third quarter.

The Golden Bulls would take the 14-9 lead when Gabriel Yuille (Baltimore, Md.) hauled in a 38-yard pass at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

The Rams responded, scoring the eventual game-winning touchdown when WSSU's Kerrion Moore capped an 18-play, 85 yard drive that melted 8:20 off the fourth quarter clock, with a 1-yard run at the 3:17 mark. The Golden Bulls had two more possessions to attempt the comeback, but could not mount a serious threat in the closing minutes of the game.

Fayetteville State comes into Saturday's matchup after taking a hard-fought 7-6 road win over Shaw in horrible conditions brought on by Hurricane Matthew.

FSU fell down 6-0 in the second quarter after Shaw's Uriah Bethea rushed for a 1-yard score. The Bears' PAT was blocked.

The Broncos scored the game-winning touchdown with 4:32 left in the third quarter after Devin Knudsen connected with Roy Lowder for a 3-yard score. The PAT was good putting the Broncos up 7-6, a score that would stand throughout the fourth quarter.

The win snapped a five-game losing skid for the Broncos and moves them to 1-5 overall, 1-2 in CIAA play and 1-0 in Southern Division play.
