Fayetteville, N.C. (Oct.15, 2016) – Fayetteville State got 243 yards from running back Stevie Green and 394 yards of total offense as they downed Johnson C. Smith University 34-21 in CIAA Southern Division football action from Luther Jeralds Stadium in Fayetteville on Saturday afternoon.
JCSU got on the board first after
Braxton Gambrell (Seneca, S.C.) hauled in a pass from
Harold Herbin (Fayetteville, N.C.) to make it 7-0 at the 4:24 mark in the first quarter. FSU would cut the JCSU lead to 7-3 following a 35-yard field goal from David Lamb with 1:10 left in the first quarter.
A Devin Knudsen touchdown pass to Jaden Maynor put FSU ahead 10-7 with 2:24 before halftime but JCSU reclaimed the lead 14-10 when Herbin found
Demarcus Berry (Vanceboro, N.C.) for a 6-yard score with only six seconds left before the halftime.
FSU then scored 17 unanswered points to begin the second half with two big play following a Lamb 26-yard field goal. FSU defensive back David Stephenson stepped in front of a Herbin pass and raced 36-yards to score on the interceptions return to make it 20-14. After a JCSU punt, the Broncos Stevie Green busted up the middle and raced 76-yards for the touchdown, boosting the FSU lead to 27-14 with 3:11 remaining in the third quarter.
JCSU was able to put together a 12-play, 79-yard drive capped by a 1-yard Herbin run to pull JCSU to within 27-21. FSU then got a 14-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Harvey and a 29=yard Lamb field goal to provide the 37-21 final.
The loss drops JCSU to 1-6 overall, 1-3 in CIAA play and 0-2 in the Southern Division.
The Golden Bulls will take to the road for the final road game of the season on Oct. 22, when it travels to take on Shaw at Durham County Stadium.
