Volleyball Comes Up Short vs. St. Augustine's

Box Score JCSU Volleyball Comes Up Short Against St. Augustine's

Charlotte, N.C. (Oct. 17, 2016) – The Johnson C. Smith University volleyball team dropped a first tough set and could not overcome a potent St. Augustine's attack, dropping a 3-0 (30-28, 25-21, 25-15) CIAA Southern Division match at Brayboy Gym on Monday evening.

In the first set, the Golden Bulls fell down early 11-5, but fought back to take the 20-17 lead after a Falcon service error. SAU would then battle back to tie the match at 22-22. JCSU would take the 25-24 lead and was poised to take the set, but back-to-back kills from Brittany Jamison and Marley Parker gave SAU the set point opportunity, forcing a JCSU timeout. JCSU would fight off two set points, tying the set at 28-28, but SAU closed the set on two consecutive kills from Shakera Hall, taking the set 30-28.

JCSU would never lead again in the match, with SAU jumping out to a 13-7 lead in set two, eventually winning 25-21. In set three, SAU again jumped out to a big lead, 8-1 and eventually stretched the cushion to 19-9 on their way to a 25-15 set three win to clinch the match.
SAU's Shakera Hall knocked down 22 kills on the night while also piling p 12 digs. Setter Megan Mahon had 39 assists for the Falcons.

For the Golden Bulls, sophomore Anteesha Smoots (San Antonio, Tex.) led the way with eight kills while freshman Georgina Diaz (Lincolnton, N.C.) had nine digs.  JCSU was particularly strong on the front, as the Golden Bulls had 14.0 blocks on the night. Amirah Burnett (Baltimore, Md.) had three solo and three block assists alongside junior Makayla Adams (Michigan City, Ind.) who tallied one solo block and four block assists.

The loss drops JCSU to 3-12 overall, 2-9 in CIAA play and 0-5 in the Southern Division. St. Augustine's improves to 8-10, 5-7 CIAA and 3-3 in the Southern Division.

The Golden Bulls have a short turnaround, as they host nearby Johnson & Wales in non-conference action on Tuesday night. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
