Box Score JCSU Volleyball Takes Thrilling 3-2 Win Over Johnson & Wales
Charlotte, N.C. (Oct. 18, 2016) – The Johnson C. Smith University volleyball team snapped a six-match losing streak by defeating visiting Johnson & Wales 3-2 (17-25, 25-18, 25-19, 21-25, 15-12) in nonconference play from Brayboy Gym on Tuesday night.
After dropping the first set to the Wildcats 25-17, JCSU responded with two consecutive wins to take the 2-1 lead. In set four, JWU jumped out to a 13-6 lead before the Golden Bulls closed to within 15-12 after a JWU attack error. JWU would stretch their lead to 20-14 before JCSU made a 7-4 run to pull to within 24-21, however, a kill from JWU's Madison Steed closed out the set and tied the match at 2-2.
JCSU responded in set five, racing out to a 10-6 lead thanks to a kill from juniorÂ
Makayla Adams (Michigan City, Ind.). JWU closed to 12-9 but JCSU got two kills from
Anteesha Smoots (San Antonio, Tex.) to boost the lead to 14-10. JWU then recorded a kill and an ace to make it 14-12, but Adams sealed the win for JCSU with a kill to close the set and match with the 15-12 win.
Smoots would have her best outing of the season in knocking down 20 kills and hitting for a .364 percentage.
Amirah Burnett (Baltimore, Md.) also had a solid outing, going for 11 kills while contributing seven solo blocks. McNeil would dish out 38 assists and contribute 17 digs for the Golden Bulls while teammate
Georgina Diaz (Lincolnton, N.C.) would have 19 digs. Diaz would also record four aces alongside
Keondra Jones (West Columbia, S.C.). Jones also had 10 digs on the night.
JWU was led by Lucy Hermann's 20 kills.
The win improves JCSU to 4-12 on the season while JWU falls to 17-8.
The Golden Bulls will jump back into CIAA play on Monday, Oct., 24 with a 6:00 p.m. match at Shaw.
