JCSU Welcomes St. Augustine's For Homecoming
Charlotte, N.C. (Oct. 28, 2016) – The Johnson C. Smith University football team returns home for the first time since Oct. 9, hosting the St. Augustine's University Falcons for Homecoming 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at the Irwin Belk Complex.
The Golden Bulls enter the game after dropping a hard-fought 11-8 decision at Shaw University in Durham last Saturday. Against the Bears, JCSU was limited to 129 yards of offense while Shaw rushed for 179 in the loss.
JCSU's lone score came when tight end
Randy Wiley (Columbia, S.C.) caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from quarterback
Harold Herbin (Fayetteville, N.C.) in the latter stages of the second quarter to put JCSU up 6-3. On the ensuing PAT attempt, holder
Carlo Thomas (East Orange, N.J.) took a bad snap and as he was being brought down by a host of Bear defenders, flipped the ball upwards and kickerÂ
Brandon Howard (Columbia, S.C.)Â plucked it out of the air and followed his blockers into the endzone for an improbable two-point conversion to put JCSU up 8-3.
Shaw would later score to go up 11-8 with 6:02 to play. JCSU got a 53-yard run fromÂ
Gabriel Yuille (Baltimore, Md.), the longest JCSU rush on the season, to put the Golden Bulls into scoring position at the Shaw 22. After a penalty and a negative rush, JCSU lined up for a 36-yard field goal attempt that sailed wide left.
JCSU then forced another punt but could not cash in as Shaw preserved the 11-8 win.
St. Augustine's enters after dropping a 39-16 decision to Fayetteville State last Saturday. SAU's Rovonta Johnson rushed for 101 yards and one touchdown in the loss while Falcon quarterback D.J. Johnson threw for 150 yards and a touchdown. Johnson also threw three interceptions in the loss.
