Box Score Slippery Rock Sneaks Past JCSU Women's Basketball 80-79 in Season Opener
Charlotte, N.C. (Nov. 11, 2016) – Visiting Slippery Rock University went on a 9-0 run over the final 2:22 to sneak past Johnson C. Smith University 80-79 in the women's basketball opener for both teams on Friday afternoon at Brayboy Gym in the CIAA-PSAC Challenge.
The Golden Bulls (0-1) went ahead 79-71 on a three point by freshman
Malia Rivers (Pageland, S.C.) with just 2:22 remaining. Slippery Rock (1-0) responded on a four-point play from Lexi Carpenter to cut the JCSU lead to 79-74. Carpenter's free throw cut the lead to 79-75 with just 2:08 remaining. Following a JCSU miss, SRU then trimmed the lead to 79-77 after a driving layup from Cassidy Wright. After a JCSU foul, two free throws from LeeAnn Gibson knotted the game at 79-79 with just 59 seconds remaining.
A JCSU turnover and foul led to two free throw attempts from SRU's Morgan Henderson, with Henderson hitting the first. Following a miss on the second attempt, Rivers was off target on a jumper. Another JCSU foul sent SRU's Cassidy Wright to the line for two shots, but she missed both allowing JCSU with one last opportunity for a game-winning shot, but freshman
Maiya Green (San Antonio, Tex.) could not connect at the buzzer, as SRU claimed the 80-79 win.
SRU outshot the Golden Bulls, finishing with a 45% outing on a 27-of-60 effort, while JCSU went 30-for-80 for 37.5%.
Rivers led all JCSU scorers, scoring 25 points in her collegiate debut while junior
Blaire Thomas (Waterloo, Iowa) had 24 points to go along with 10 rebounds.
Monique Hall also scored in double-figures for the Golden Bulls, finishing with 15 points.
SRU had three players in double-figures, led by Brooke Hinderliter's 18 points. Carpenter added 15 while Mallory Heinle had 14 in the win.
JCSU will return to the court on Saturday, Nov. 12, hosting Seton Hill in the final day of the CIAA-PSAC Challenge.
