JCSU Hires Ramona Staton and Tim Hunter to Head Tennis Programs
Charlotte, N.C. (Nov. 15, 2016) – Johnson C. Smith University has hired
Ramona Staton and
Timothy Hunter to lead the Golden Bulls tennis programs.
Staton, no stranger to the Charlotte tennis community and college coaching, comes to JCSU after serving most recently at the Myers Park Country Club in Charlotte. At Myers Park, she assisted in the daily operations of the tennis operations. She also was a Tennis Professional at the Cobblestone Park Golf Club in Blythewood, S.C. for four years. There, she provided private instruction as well as group instruction for beginners through advanced players. She also helped boost revenues for the club by developing several marketing plans.
Her collegiate coaching experience includes serving as the head women's tennis coach at nearby Queens University from 2005-2007. While at Queens, she led the Royals to a 20-24 overall record and 10-10 in Conference Carolinas play. At Queens, two all-conference and all-tournament players and honorable mention doubles players during her two seasons with the Royals. A North Carolina native, she played her collegiate tennis as the No. 1 singles and doubles at Benedict College in Columbia, SC from 1999-2002.
After Benedict, she earned her Master of Science degree in Athletic Administration and Sport Management from Indiana University.
Staton is a Certified Pro with the United States Professional Tennis Association, a member of the American Tennis Association and holds a 5.0 rating with the USTA.
Hunter, a 2005 JCSU graduate and former men's tennis player, brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to lead the JCSU men's program.
His coaching career started in 1994 when he started as an instructor in the National Junior Tennis League. He also has provided training to beginners and intermediate players with the Mecklenburg Parks and Recreation Department as well as serving as a private tennis instructor since his graduation in 2005.Â
He also has been active as a player, competing in several ATA singles and doubles events. He also played professionally in 2000 and was a member of the Junior World Tennis Team in 1999. He also has participated in the State Games of America and was a gold medalist in the State Games of Mississippi in 1998.
