Lincoln University, Pa. -- (Dec. 17, 2016) – Freshman
Mailia Rivers scored a game-high 17 points as the Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team downed Lincoln 67-52 in their CIAA opener at Manuel Rivero Hall on Saturday afternoon.
Rivers, a Pageland, S.C. product, finished 6-of-11 from the field and nailed two three pointers in the win. Junior teammate
Blaire Thomas (Waterloo, Iowa) had 13 points and a team-leading six rebounds. The other JCSU player in double-figures was
Asha Jordan (Monroe, N.C.) as she tallied 11 points and five rebounds.
After shooting just 34.5% in the first half, the Golden Bulls went on a 15-5 run to start the third quarter, claiming the 41-29 lead with 4:01 left in the quarter after two
Krista White (Dayton, Ohio) free throws.
Lincoln was able to trim the Golden Bulls lead to 45-40 in the fourth quarter after two free throws, but the Golden Bulls quickly padded the lead back to 14 points at 54-40 when
Anika Jones (Shelby, N.C.) converted a layup with 4:29 to play.
The home standing Lions could not get any closer than 11 points the rest of the way, as JCSU coasted to the 67-52 win.
With the win, JCSU improves to 8-2 overall and 1-0 in CIAA play while Lincoln drops to 3-7 and 1-2 in league play.
JCSU will next head to Bowie State on Monday, Dec. 19 for a 4:00 p.m. matchup with the Bulldogs.
