JCSU Women's Basketball Closes 2016 With 80-67 Loss at Lander
Greenwood, S.C. (Dec. 31, 2016) – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team had four players score in double-figures but it was not enough as Lander University took an 80-67 home win on Saturday afternoon.
JCSU freshman
Malia Rivers (San Antonio, Tex.) hit four three-pointers in the loss, finishing with a team-high 16 points. She went 6-of-15 from the field and grabbed five rebounds for the Golden Bulls.
Senior guard
Anika Jones (Shelby, N.C.) also had a productive afternoon by scoring 14 points on a 6-of-12 shooting effort. She also went 2-of-3 from the free throw line.
Rounding out the scoring for the Golden Bulls was junior forward
Blaire Thomas (Waterloo, Iowa) with 12 points and junior
Kendall Adams (Opelika, Ala.) had 11 in the loss.
As a team, the Golden Bulls shot 45.8% (27-of-59) from the field and 7-of-10 from the free throw line. The Golden Bulls also hit 6-of-15 from long range.
Lander got 25 points from Tynhesha Reynolds and 20 from Mylea McKenith in the win. The Bearcats held a distinct advantage on the free throw line, connecting for 18-of-27 shots after JCSU was whistled for 24 fouls.
The loss drops JCSU to 8-4 on the season while Lander improves to 7-3.
The Golden Bulls will next return to play on Jan. 5, hosting CIAA Northern Division opponent Chowan at 5:30 p.m.
