Fayetteville State Runs By JCSU Women's Basketball

Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (Feb. 6, 2016) –  Despite having four players score in double figures, the Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team fell to Fayetteville State, 91-81 on Saturday afternoon in Brayboy Gym.

The Golden Bulls were led by sophomore Asha Jordan (Monroe, N.C.) as she had 24 points and went 15-of-19 from the free throw line.  She also had six assists.  Freshman A'Diyah Ussery (Shelby, N.C.) hit three from distance and finished with 13 points.  Senior Ashley Porter (Winston-Salem, N.C.) chipped in 11 points while junior Krista White (Dayton, Ohio) had 10.  Junior MaryAnna Moore (Laurens, S.C.) led JCSU on the boards with nine rebounds.

Fayetteville State also got an eye-popping performance from Courtney Best as she was a perfect 13-of-13 from the field, 1-of-1 from long range and 2-for-2 from the line to complete her day with 29 points.  She also secured 10 rebounds for the double-double.  Vernessa Hinnant also had 20 points while Shamiaya Battle finished with 12.  Doreen Richardson rounded out the Lady Broncos double-digit scoring with 11 points.

After being ahead by only six after the end of the first quarter the visiting Lady Broncos took control in the second quarter and built their lead to 19 points (42-23) by the 1:21 mark and held a 14 point advantage at halftime.

After FSU built their lead back to 18 points at 56-38, JCSU embarked on a 20-6 run over the final 5:39 of the quarter to trim the deficit to 62-58.  After JCSU trailed 68-63 with 5:28 left, Fayetteville State would respond to build their lead back to 73-63 at the 4:38 mark and JCSU would never threaten again, as the Broncos secured the 91-81 win.

The loss drops JCSU to 13-10 overall, 6-6 in CIAA play and 2-4 in Southern Division play while FSU now stands at 13-10 overall, 7-5 in league play and 4-2 in the Southern Division.

JCSU will next take to the court on Wednesday, Feb. 10 with a game at St. Augustine's.  Tipoff from Emery Gymnasium is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
