The 2015-16 athletics season at Johnson C. Smith University has been one that has produced record-breaking performances, championships, and numerous individual awards for the Golden Bulls and brought countless recognition to our university. Follow the recap below to learn of the accomplishments of those who wear the Gold and Blue!

2015 Football
Under first-year head coach Kermit Blount, the JCSU football team completed the season with a 4-6 overall mark, including a 3-4 run in CIAA play. The Golden Bulls gave coach Blount his first win at the helm of the JCSU program on the road at Kentucky State. Against the Thorobreds, JCSU's Keith Darnell (Jonesboro, Ga.) capped the scoring with a 53 yard blocked field goal return for a touchdown, solidifying the 38-14 win. After four consecutive losses, JCSU scored an upset home win over Fayetteville State, 37-20. The win over the Broncos ignited a three-game winning streak which included a homecoming win over Shaw (17-10) and a road win at St. Augustine's (22-3). Looking for four straight wins to close the season, JCSU travelled to Salisbury, N.C. to take on the Livingstone Blue Bears in the Commemorative Classic. In sloppy conditions, Livingstone claimed the trophy for the first time, downing JCSU 35-12 to end the season.

Several Golden Bulls earned postseason honors, including Austin Jacques (Springdale, Md.) being named CIAA Defensive Player of the Year. All told, eight players earned All-CIAA honors.  Sophomore safety
Carlo Thomas (East Orange, N.J.) also had a breakout year, earning several All-America designations including being named to the AP Little All-American Team. In addition, both Jacques and Thomas were finalists for the Cliff Harris Award.

2015 Volleyball
The JCSU volleyball team completed their season with a 4-21 overall record on the 2015 campaign.  JCSU's four victories came over Morris, Johnson & Wales, Lincoln and Elizabeth City State.  Against Johnson & Wales, JCSU hosted the Purple Match of Honor.  In that match, JCSU honored the members of the Emanuel Nine, including senior player Gracyn Doctor (Charleston, S.C.) and her sister, JWU freshman player Kaylin Doctor.  The match drew a capacity crowd to Brayboy Gym and sparked tremendous community support to spread the mission of eliminating violence from our daily lives.  Several local and national media covered the event.  In the spring, the NCAA featured both Doctor sisters in the NCAA Champion magazine.

2015 Cross Country
The JCSU women's cross country team brought home a runner-up finish at the CIAA Cross Country championships.  Domenique Julius-Williams (Oshawa, Ontario) finished sixth for the Golden Bulls while teammate Fellan Ferguson (Trelawny, Jamaica) managed a 13th place finish over the 5k course at the WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.

For the JCSU men, senior Waynee Hyman (Warwick, N.Y.) was the top Golden Bull finisher on the 8k course with a time of 30:48.  Teammate Marvin Woodward (Bloomfield, Conn.) finished in 35th and Patrick Campbell (St. Elizabeth, Jamaica) completed the course in 49th.  As a team, JCSU finished in 11th place.

2015-16 Women's Basketball
The JCSU women's basketball team returned another successful season under the helm of head coach Stephen Joyner, Jr.  The Golden Bulls finished with a 17-12 overall record and a 9-7 mark in CIAA play.  The Golden Bulls started the season hot, scoring a 117-96 win over Glenville State College on Nov. 14.  The 117 points is the most ever scored in a season opener in program history.  During the course of the season, the Golden Bulls halted Virginia Union's unbeaten streak with a 77-75 win in Brayboy Gym.  Against the Panthers, freshman A'Diyah Ussery (Shelby, N.C.) canned a pair of free throws with under a second remaining to earn the win. In the CIAA Tournament, JCSU dispatched Elizabeth City State 70-50 in the first round, earning a rematch with the Panthers.  Virginia Union was able to exact some revenge, as they ended JCSU's season, downing the Golden Bulls 84-68.

Senior Ashley Porter (Winston-Salem, N.C.) earned All-CIAA first team honors while freshman A'Diyah Ussery was named to the All-Rookie Team.  Asha Jordan (Monroe, N.C.) earned All-Tournament honors.

2015-16 Men's Basketball
The JCSU Men's basketball team earned the 2016 CIAA Southern Division Championship by downing Shaw 102-92 in the regular-season finale in a jam-packed Brayboy Gym.  Against the Bears, JCSU got 31 points from Stedmon Lemon (Lithonia, Ga.) while Diondre Pratt (Morven, N.C.) had 21 and Robert Davis (West Friendship, Md.) chipped in 15 points.

The Golden Bulls met rival Livingstone in the CIAA Tournament and the teams battled in an epic double-overtime thriller.  When the dust settled, Livingstone came away with the 97-91 win, ending JCSU's season at 14-12 overall.

Stedmon Lemon earned JCSU's first CIAA Player of the Year honors since 2003 and was later named to the D2CCA All-Atlantic Region Team.

Early in the season, longtime JCSU head coach Stephen Joyner, Sr. became just the fourth active head coach in North Carolina to have notched 500 head coaching wins.  At the time, he joined Duke's Mike Kryzyzewski, North Carolina's Roy Williams and Western Carolina's Larry Hunter as the only coaches with 500 wins.  Davidson's Bob McKillop earned his 500th win just days after Joyner.  Only Joyner, Kryzyzewski, and Bob McKillop have achieved the feat while coaching at one school.

2015-16 Indoor Track & Field
The JCSU Indoor Track & Field teams had eight athletes named All-Americans by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for their performances at the NCAA Division II Championships in Pittsburg, Kan.

The JCSU women got third-place finishes from Tovea Jenkins (St. James, Jamaica) in the 400m and Fellan Ferguson (Trelawny, Jamaica) in the 800m.  In addition, the women's 4x400 relay team captured a runner-up finish with a 3:39.91.

Following the season, Ferguson was tabbed as the Atlantic Region Runner of the Year.

For the JCSU men, Waynee Hyman (Warwick, N.Y.) and Joshua Cunningham (Toronto, Ontario) each earned All-America designations with Hyman claiming third place in the 200m and Cunningham finishing fifth in the 400m.

2015-16 Bowling
JCSU's Sydney Brown (Davison, Mich.) and Alexis Haith (Waukegon, Ill.) each earned All-CIAA honors and head coach Kim Miles earned CIAA Coach of the Year for the 2015-16 season.  Collectively, JCSU finished with a 25-23 record in head-to-head matches over the season.  Individually, Brown finished with a 171.10 average on the season while Haith finished with a 169.87.

2015-16 Men's Tennis
JCSU's Anthony Jefferson (Atlanta, Ga.) earned All-CIAA honors for the JCSU men's tennis team.  Jefferson completed his season with a 2-4 mark in CIAA to earn the honors.

2015-16 Women's Tennis
The JCSU women's tennis team completed their season with a 7-16 overall record, including a 7-5 mark in CIAA play.  JCSU was led by Kaylin Roman (Atlanta, Ga.), as she finished 8-3 in league play, primarily playing No. 5 singles.  Teammate Alex Barber (Laurel, Md.) completed a 4-3 league mark, mostly at No. 6 singles while Michaela Colvin (Fayetteville, N.C.) and Victoria Ogundipe (Jonesboro, Ga.) both returned 5-5 CIAA records.  Jasmine Riddick (Atlanta, Ga.) also had a productive year, finishing 6-6 in league play.

2016 Softball
The JCSU softball team finished third in the CIAA Southern Division with a 6-4 record.  JCSU also earned a win over eventual CIAA Champion Winston-Salem State, 4-2 on April 16.  The win over WSSU was the first win over the Rams since they rejoined the CIAA.

Three JCSU infielders were named to the All-CIAA Second team.  Morgan Hasty (Salem, Ind.) earned the honors at third base while Jocelyn Hernandez (Bloomington, Ca.) won for her play at shortstop.  Second baseman Tia Mahoney (Hartwell, Ga.) also received All-CIAA honors.

The Golden Bulls advanced to the CIAA Tournament for the second straight season and finished the 2016 campaign with a 10-18 overall record.

2016 Women's Track & Field
The 2015 JCSU women's track & field team captured the 2016 CIAA Championship in dramatic fashion with a breakaway win in the 4x400 relay, the final race of the meet.  The win marks the fourth championship in the past nine year for the JCSU program.

The Golden Bulls claimed five individual championships in the meet. Kendra Clarke (Edmonton, Alberta) won the 400m while Fellan Ferguson (Trelawny, Jamaica) won the 800m and 1500m events.  JCSU also claimed the title in the 4x100 relay and in the championship-clinching 4x400 relay.

In the NCAA Outdoor Championships, the women's 4x400m relay team of Ferguson, Crystal Campbell (St. Catherine, Jamaica) Tovea Jenkins (St. James, Jamaica) and Domenique Julius-Williams (Oshawa, Ontario) won the 4x400m relay, outdistancing themselves from the second place finishers from Shorter University by nearly three seconds.

2016 Men's Track & Field
The 2015 JCSU men's track & field team claimed fourth place in the CIAA Championships while bringing home two individual championships.

In the 4x400 relay, Joshua Cunningham (Toronto, Ontario), Waynee Hyman (Warwick, N.Y.), Patrick Campbell (St. Elizabeth, Jamaica) and Kyle Robinson (Levelland, Tex.) won with a 3:11.68.  Individually, Cunningham claimed the 400m title with a 46.02 while Hyman came in third with a 47.13.

In the NCAA Outdoor Championships Cunningham, Hyman, Campbell and Robinson were each named USTFCCCA First Team All-Americans in the 4x400m

2016 Golf
The 2015 men's golf team managed a seventh place finish in the CIAA Golf Championships.  As the hosts for the event, JCSU freshman DeJuan Powell (Atlanta, Ga.) had a stellar tournament, finishing tied for second overall by firing a 152 over the two-day event.  His finished helped him earn All-CIAA honors.
