JCSU Sports Information
Charlotte, N.C. (Sept. 15, 2016) – The Johnson C. Smith University football team looks to rebound from a disappointing 52-0 loss to Bowie State this Saturday when they travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on their first FCS opponent in two seasons in the Wofford Terriers.
Last week the Golden Bulls struggled against the CIAA preseason favorite Bowie State Bulldogs on an unusually hot afternoon at Bulldogs Stadium. The JCSU defense forced three turnovers early in the game, all within the BSU 15-yard line, but could not break through for a score.
Bowie State freshman Amir Hall had another big game, throwing for 262 yards, earning his second consecutive CIAA Rookie of the Week award. BSU also gained 357 yards on the ground against the Golden Bulls led by Maurice Williams' 154 yards and Robert Chesson's 113. All told, BSU piled up 619 yards while running 100 plays.
The JCSU offense looks to get back on track after managing just 98 yards of total offense. Sophomore quarterback
Jordan Lane (Charlotte, N.C.), who threw for 227 yards and two touchdowns in week one at Wingate, was limited to eight completions and just 34 yards. The JCSU run game also had a hard time getting traction against Bowie State, managing just 18 yards on 21 total carriers.
Wofford enters the game at 1-1 after falling at #18 Ole Miss, 38-13. The Terriers, picked to finish sixth in the SoCon preseason coaches and media polls, finished with 233 yards rushing and were led by Brad Butler's 59 yards. Butler also accounted for the Terriers only touchdown of the day. Lorenzo Long also had 51 yards for Wofford on 17 carries. Wofford only completed five passes out of their wingbone offense, with Butler completing 4-of-7 attempts for 40 yards.
JCSU is 1-1 in their last two games against FCS opponents. In JCSU's last game against an FCS foe, the Golden Bulls fell at Charlotte 56-0 in the 2014 season opener. Prior to that game, JCSU downed Davidson 35-22 early in the 2013 season at the Irwin Belk Complex.
Kickoff from Wofford's Gibbs Stadium is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start. Fans not able to make the trip can follow all the action on 1450/100.7 WGNC with Dave Friedman on the call. The game will also be available on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.
