JCSU Football Drops 59-0 Decision at FCS Wofford

Spartanburg, S.C. (Sept. 17, 2016)
–  Wofford College got three touchdown runs from Lorenzo Long and racked up 330 yards rushing while limiting the Johnson C. Smith University offense to 102 yards, taking a 59-0 win on Saturday afternoon at Gibbs Stadium.

The Terriers (2-1) led JCSU 7-0 after the first quarter thanks to the first touchdown by Long. His two yard rush came after JCSU forced the Terrier offense to punt, but a fumble gave Wofford a new series at the JCSU 28-yard line. Four plays later, Long broke through for the initial score.

In the second quarter, Wofford went up 14-0 after Long scampered in from 24 yards out to make it 14-0 with 4:50 left. The Golden Bulls were again forced to punt and Wofford took advantage of their next drive, starting at the 2:26 mark. With their full complement of timeouts, Wofford methodically worked their way downfield, setting up a 38-yard field goal attempt from David Marvin that made the score 17-0 at halftime.

Wofford would go on to score three touchdowns in both the third and fourth quarters. In the third, Long scored again, his third touchdown of the day, when he raced in from 16 yards out to boost the Terrier cushion to 24-0 at the 11:17 mark.  The Terrier defense would score just 13 seconds later after pinning JCSU at their own six yard line. On the first play of the JCSU drive, Wofford was able to penetrate the offensive line and force a fumble by JCSU quarterback Jordan Lane (Charlotte, N.C.), with Mikel Horton recovering the fumble in the endzone for the touchdown that put Wofford up 31-0. Lane left the game after the play with a lower leg injury and did not return.

Wofford would then go to the air, as Brad Butler delivered a 13 yard strike to Chandler Gouger to make it 38-0 with 4:49 left.

In the fourth quarter, Wofford scored on two interception returns, the first going for 81 yards and the latter going for 54 yards, making it 52-0 with 12:18 to play. The Terriers would cap the scoring at the 7:30 mark when Luke Childress ran in from seven yards out to provide the 59-0 final.

JCSU was again limited on offense, with reserve quarterback Harold Herbin (Fayetteville, N.C.) accounting for 17 rushing yards on seven carries. Herbin also was 6-of-9 passing for 62 yards while throwing two interceptions. Demarcus Berry (Vanceboro, N.C.) led the JCSU receiving corps, hauling in two passes for 39 yards.

Defensively, JCSU's Kahj Huitt (Smyrna, Ga.) recorded 12 tackles on the day with 3.5 going for loss. Basir Wright (Douglasville, Ga.) also had 12 tackles on the afternoon.

After three consecutive road games to begin the season, JCSU (0-3) will open the home portion of the season on Saturday, Sept. 24, hosting CIAA Northern Division foe Elizabeth City State in a 4:00 p.m. kickoff from the Irwin Belk Complex.
