Dear Students,
Â
Charlotte is once again mourning the loss of a Black man tragically taken from us through a violent confrontation with the police.
Â
The death of Keith Lamont Scott seems part of an unrelenting cycle, coming as closely as it does on the heels of the Tulsa, Okla. killing of Terence Crutcher. During this moment of grief, let us remember that all of the facts have not yet been gathered in this case. Let us temper the rush to judgment by the fact the officer who shot Scott has been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is under investigation, and Mayor Jennifer Roberts, CMPD Chief Kerr Putney and other community leaders held a press conference this morning calling for calm and committing to a transparent inquiry into the case.
Â
As young citizens, you have the right to voice your sorrow and anger. You must not be immobilized by pain, nor feel powerless or devalued. We value you. Johnson C. Smith University values your lives and your futures. So we ask that, as you seek solutions and push for justice, you also remain safe and demonstrate wisdom to those who look to you as their mentors.
Â
As residents of this historic community and proud Smithites, let's follow the facts of the investigation as it continues. If we are moved to take action, let's choose a path that speaks to our strengths and seek out the guidance of experienced activists. Let's carefully consider goals, means and possible outcomes, and rebuke the boisterous voices that enflame emotions in calls for retaliation.
Â
We grieve for the families of Keith Scott, Terence Crutcher and others, as well as for upstanding officers of the law who've made the ultimate sacrifice to uphold, protect and serve all citizens. We will not turn against one another, but stand together to keep our communities safe and ensure justice for all.
Â
Sincerely,
 Â
Ronald L. Carter, Ph.D.
President, Johnson C. Smith University
