JCSU Football Hosts Elizabeth City State in Home Opener
Charlotte, N.C. (Sept. 20, 2016) – The Johnson C. Smith University football team opens the home portion of the 2016 schedule on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 4:00 p.m. against CIAA Northern Division member Elizabeth City State.
JCSU comes into the game enters the game having dropped their initial three games of the 2016 season with the last two being via shutout. Bowie State dropped the Golden Bulls 52-0 on Sept. 10 while Wofford downed JCSU last week 59-0.
Defensively, JCSU has forced eight turnovers on the season, with five coming via interception while recovering three opponent fumbles. Leading the way for JCSU is freshman
Kahj Huitt (Smyrna, Ga.), as he earned CIAA Rookie of the Week honors after totaling a team-high 12 tackles, including 3.5 for loss against the Terriers.
Basir Wright (Douglasville, Ga.) also continues to have a stellar season, as the sophomore defensive back has a team-leading 30 tackles on the season, including one interception. On the line,
Jamaal Tutt (Atlanta, Ga.) is playing well, as he has tallied 17 tackles, 3.5 for loss and has 1.5 sacks to his credit.
Offensively, the Golden Bulls will have to overcome the loss of sophomore quarterback
Jordan Lane (Charlotte, N.C.) who will miss the remainder of the season with a lower leg injury sustained in the third quarter at Wofford. Sophomore
Harold Herbin (Fayetteville, N.C.) is poised to take over as the primary JCSU signal caller. Herbin finished the Wofford game passing for 62 yards on a 6-of-9 effort while rushing for 17.
Elizabeth City State (1-2) enters the matchup after taking down Morehouse 35-30 in the Down East Football Classic last week in Rocky Mount, N.C. The Vikings were led by quarterback Daquan Neal, as he threw for 194 yards on a 14-of-38 effort, connecting with four different Viking receivers for scores.
The Viking defense was able to force three Morehouse turnovers on the afternoon. Additionally, ECSU's defense was highlighted by Soloman Radcliffe, as he registered nine tackles and a pass breakup. Teammate Miacah Cooper had eight tackles, one sack and two tackles for loss. Also recording sacks for the Vikings were Tremayne Sweat (2.5) and Jordon Stockton (.5). Collectively, the ECSU defense was able to get to the Morehouse quarterbacks four times on the afternoon.
