JCSU Football Visits Chowan in CIAA Play

Charlotte, N.C. (Sept. 28, 2016)
– Fresh off a last-second 31-28 win over CIAA Northern Division foe Elizabeth City State, the Johnson C. Smith University football team will take to the road this Saturday, playing at Northern Division opponent Chowan.

Last week, the Golden Bulls withstood a late ECSU rally to take the 31-28 home win at the Irwin Belk Complex. With just 1:39 left, ECSU got a six-yard touchdown run from Davion Council followed by a Daquan Neal rush up the middle for the two-point conversion to knot the score at 28-28.

After a 49-yard kickoff return from JeJuan McCalston (Covington, Ga.) was nullified by a penalty, JCSU took over from the 21-yard line and quickly moved up the field with two completions to Eugene Holmes (Columbia, S.C.) and a big 25-yard reception by Demarcus Berry (Winterville, N.C.), putting JCSU at the ECSU 34. An unsportsmanlike penalty on the Vikings aided the JCSU cause, setting the Golden Bulls up at the 19-yard line with just 32 seconds remaining.

After a pass interference penalty on ECSU brought JCSU to the 9-yard line, the Golden Bulls were flagged for holding, pushing them back to the 20. A Desean Binyard (Winston-Salem, N.C.) rush set up kicker Matias Lambrecht (Venice, Fla.) with a 33-yard field goal attempt that split the uprights as time expired, giving the Golden Bulls the 31-28 win.

For his efforts, Lambrecht was named CIAA Special Teams Player of the Week for the second consecutive week. Lambrecht was a perfect 4-of-4 on his point-after attempts and knocked three punts of 50 yards including a long of 57, pinning ECSU inside the 20-yard line on three occasions.

Also earning weekly honors for the Golden Bulls was sophomore defensive back Basir Wright (Douglasville, Ga.). Wright totaled 10 tackles, a half sack and had two pass breakups in the win.

Chowan enters the game after rolling up 401 yards of offense in their 41-13 trouncing of Livingstone last Saturday in Salisbury. Hawks quarterback Randall Dixon completed 21-of-32 pass attempts for a staggering 372 yards and five touchdowns in the win. He connected with nine different receivers including Ryan Nolan seven times for 135 yards and one touchdown, Charles Holmes three times for 43 yards and one touchdown and Tyrone Carter twice for 67 yards and one touchdown.

Kickoff from Chowan's Garrison Stadium is slated for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff.  Fans not able to make the trip can follow the action on WGNC 1450AM/100.7FM with Dave Friedman having the call.
