JCSU Football Heads to Bowie State for Nonconference Matchup
Charlotte, N.C. (Sept. 8, 2016) – The Johnson C. Smith University football team will hit the road for the second of three consecutive road games, traveling to face Bowie State in a nonconference game with the Bulldogs on Saturday, Sept. 10. Kickoff from Bulldogs Stadium is slated for 4:00 p.m.
The Golden Bulls (0-1) enter the game after a hard-fought 38-28 road loss to Wingate in their season opener. Against Wingate, JCSU sophomore quarterback
Jordan Lane (Charlotte, N.C.) tossed for 227 yards on a 12-of-28 performance. He connected for two touchdowns, one on an 82-yard strike to sophomore
Demarcus Berry (Vanceboro, N.C.) and the other on a 26-yard toss to senior
Rod Carter (Miami, Fla.).Â
JCSU's special teams got into the scoring mood when freshman
Desmond Dozier (Longs, S.C.) took a kickoff 86-yards to pay dirt early in the third quarter. Dozier's heroics sparked the Golden Bulls, as Carter's touchdown reception and a 48-yard interception return from junior safetyÂ
Carlo Thomas (East Orange, N.J.) brought the Golden Bulls to within 31-28 with 9:27 to play.
Thomas was the leading JCSU tackler on the afternoon, combining for 13 total tackles, 10 of which were solo stops. Sophomore
Basir Wright (Douglasville, Ga.) had his best outing while wearing the Gold and Blue, putting together an 11 tackle performance and stopping a Wingate drive with a diving interception. Also playing well on the defensive side was junior lineman
Jamaal Tutt (Atlanta, Ga.). Tutt managed nine stops on the day with 1.5 being for loss. Fellow lineman
Brice Smith (Atlanta, Ga.) recorded a sack and two tackles for loss. Further cementing the JCSU defensive effort was sophomore linebacker
Tahj Spivey (Durham, N.C.) and senior defensive back
Desmond Taylor (Picayune, Miss.), as each recorded seven tackles on the day. Taylor also added two pass breakups.
Bowie State, the favorite to repeat as the CIAA Northern Division Champion, fell 50-48 to Seton Hill last Saturday. Freshman quarterback Amir Hall had a superb debut, throwing for 427 yards and five touchdowns and two interceptions against Seton Hill. Fellow teammate Nyme Manns set a BSU record with 211 receiving yards and tied his own school record with three touchdown receptions. Also leading BSU was senior offensive lineman Justin Nestor, as he helped the Bulldogs manage 523 yards of total offense.
