Raleigh, N.C. -- (Jan. 18, 2017) – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team came back from a 10-point second half deficit to squeeze past St. Augustine's University 63-56 at Emery Gymnasium in Raleigh.
After falling down 47-37 with 14:40 to play, JCSU went on a 11-0 run to take a 48-47 lead with 9:47 to go. The key baskets in the run came on back-to-back three-pointers from junior
Robert Davis (West Friendship, Md.) and freshman
Aaron Adair (Winston-Salem, N.C.). SAU would tie the game for the sixth and final time at 48-48 with 9:17 to go after a D.J. Harrison free throw.
From there, a pair of Davis free throws and another three-pointer extended the JCSU lead to 53-48 with 7:28 to go. Adair would add another basket to stoke JCSU to a 55-48 lead at the 6:07 mark.
The Falcons would trim the JCSU lead to 57-54 after an Anthony Gaskins three-pointer with 3:39 left. JCSU quickly extended the lead back to six points at 61-55 after two Davis free throws. with 1:11 to play. SAU could get no closer than five points the rest of the way as
Christian Kirchman (Roanoke, Va.) iced the game with 31 seconds left by downing two free throws to provide the 63-56 final.
JCSU shot 50% from the field on a 23-of-46 effort and managed a 58.3% (7-of-12) clip from long range while SAU managed a 35.7% effort on 20-of-56 shooting.
The Golden Bulls got a game-high 19 points from
Robert Davis while teammatesÂ
Gabon Williams (Charlotte, N.C.) and
Aaron Adair each had 12. Adair's tally marks a career-best.
SAU's Anthony Gaskins had 16 while Quincy January finished with 12. Kasey Bryant rounded out the SAU double-figure scoring with 10 points.
The win improves JCSU to 7-9 overall, 3-3 in CIAA play and 1-1 in the Southern Division.
JCSU will take to the road this upcoming Saturday, Jan. 21 to take on the rival Livingstone Blue Bears. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
