Box Score JCSU Women's Basketball Uses Big Second Half to Down Rival Livingstone

Salisbury, N.C. -- (Jan. 21, 2017) –
The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team shook off a poor first half and used a big second half to down Livingstone 81-69 at Trent Gym in Salisbury, N.C. on Saturday afternoon.

In the first quarter, Livingstone started hot, rattling off a 7-0 run over the first 3:43. JCSU finally got on the board at the 5:59 mark when Blaire Thomas (Waterloo, Iowa) knocked down a three-pointer to make it 7-3.

Livingstone would embark on another large run, this time an 18-2 sprint put the Blue Bears up 23-5 with 1:15 left.  LC would lead 26-7 at the end of the first quarter.

The Golden Bulls would start their run, closing the LC gap to 26-15 after a Krista White (Dayton, Ohio) layup with 6:58 to go.  After the Blue Bear lead again swelled to 11 points (31-20), JCSU would score five straight points, all from White, to cut further into the lead, making it 31-25 with 4:50 left.

JCSU would get as close as 34-31 with 1:21 before halftime after Malia Rivers (Pageland, S.C.) knocked down two free throws. A layup from Shannon Buchannan, followed by two free throws provided the 38-31 Blue Bear cushion at the break.

After falling down 45-35 in the early stages of the third quarter, the Golden Bulls would wake up, as they put together a 19-0 run over the next 5:45 that put the Golden Bulls out front 56-45.

Livingstone could not recover, as JCSU led by as many as 14 points (69-55) in the fourth quarter. The Blue Bears were also plagued with foul trouble and had five players foul-out and were forced to finish the game with only four players on the floor.

JCSU shot 43.4% (23-of-53) from the field while four players scored in double-figures. Kendall Adams (Opelika, Ala.) led the way with 17 points. Freshman Malia Rivers also continued her strong play with 15 points, as she knocked down three from distance on the afternoon. She also brought down a team-high nine rebounds on the afternoon.  Senior guard Krista White had 14 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting effort and Asha Jordan (Monroe, N.C.) chipped in 12.

Livingstone's Zena Lovette had a great day from long range, knocking down six triples on the way to scoring a game-high 24 points. Teammates Deonna Young and Shannon Buchanan had 18 and 10 points respectively for the Blue Bears.

The win improves JCSU to 13-4 overall, 6-1 in CIAA play and 3-0 in the Southern Division. Livingstone drops to 8-9 overall, 3-4 in league play and 1-1 in division.

JCSU returns to Brayboy Gym on Monday, Jan. 23 to host Elizabeth City State in a CIAA contest at 5:30 p.m.
