Box Score Golden Bulls Women's Basketball Rolls Past ECSU, 65-33
Charlotte, N.C. -- (Jan. 23, 2017) –The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team held visiting Elizabeth City State to just nine first-half points and limited the Vikings to just 18.4% shooting and led wire-to-wire in a 65-33 win in CIAA action on Monday night at Brayboy Gym.
JCSU wasted no time in jumping on the Vikings, establishing a 7-0 lead. ECSU cashed in their first basket with just 59 seconds left in the quarter, making it 9-2.
In the second, the Golden Bulls took the 20-5 lead after a
Jamia Johnson (Durham, N.C.) layup with 2:10 on the clock. Following a Viking free throw,
Monique Hall (Melbourne, Fla.) added a basket to push the lead to 22-6. Following a three-pointer from ECSU's Jalyn Brown, the Golden Bulls'Â
Krista White (Dayton, Ohio) dropped a jumper to provide the 24-9 halftime margin.
In the third quarter, JCSU steadily padded their lead, pushing it to 34-13 after a tip-in from Johnson and then to 25 points with another Johnson layup with 2:22 left. A
Blaire Thomas (Waterloo, Iowa) basket followed by a free throw closed out the quarter, making it 49-17.
The Golden Bulls would then gain their largest lead of the game at 35 points (54-19) afterÂ
Maiya Green (San Antonio, Tex.) drilled a three-pointer with 5:26 to play. ECSU would never get the JCSU lead to less than 29 points the rest of the way as JCSU took the 65-33 win.
The 33 points was the lowest allowed by a JCSU team since Jan. 29, 2011, when the Golden Bulls won at Fayetteville State 60-32.
Jamia Johnson claimed her first career double-double for the Golden Bulls with team-highs in points (15) and rebounds (10).
Blaire Thomas added 14 for JCSU while
Anika Jones had 10 points and seven assists.
ECSU's Jalyn Brown was the only Viking to score in double-figures with 10.
The win improves JCSU to 14-4 overall and 7-1 in CIAA play while ECSU sinks to 4-10 and 2-6 in league play.
JCSU will jump back into CIAA Southern Division play on Wednesday, hosting Winston-Salem State at 5:30 p.m. at Brayboy Gym.
