Box Score JCSU Men Fall to Winston-Salem State in Overtime, 72-69
Charlotte, N.C. -- (Jan. 25, 2017) –Visiting Winston-Salem State battled back from a four-point overtime deficit to defeat Johnson C. Smith University 72-69 in CIAA Southern Division play at Brayboy Gym on Wednesday evening.
Neither team could gain a large advantage throughout the game, as the largest lead came at the 12:47 mark of the first half when JCSU led 13-6. WSSU would cut the JCSU cushion to 16-14 with 7:00 in the opening half and would then take the lead one possession later after a Robert Colon three-pointer made it 17-16. After JCSU reclaimed the lead at 20-19, two free throws from WSSU's Ameer Jackson gave the Rams the 21-20 lead with 4:39 before halftime. Another three from Colon staked the Rams to the 24-20 lead, but a jumper from JCSU's
Cayse Minor (Winston-Salem, N.C.) followed by a three-pointer pushed JCSU ahead again 25-24. WSSU's William Crandell would gain the lead for the Rams at halftime on a layup with 13 seconds left.
The second half was much like the first, as the teams swapped the lead throughout. JCSU would go up 40-35 at the 15:16 mark after a
Christian Williams (Chesapeake, Va.) basket, and would later boost the lead to 42-36 after
Brandon McKinney (Hoover, Ala.) got a layup to drop at the 13:09 mark.
WSSU's Crandell would tie it at 42-42 on a dunk which sparked an 8-0 run that put WSSU up 47-42 with 9:11 to play.
JCSU again responded, tying the game at 53-53 after two
Gabon Williams (Charlotte, N.C.) free throws with 5:11 to pay. JCSU would then get a
Robert Davis (West Friendship, Md.) basket to surge ahead 55-52. After a WSSU three pointer reclaimed the Ram lead, Minor again connected for three points pulling JCSU ahead 59-56 with 3:18 to play.
WSSU's Colon would score five straight points to give the Rams the 61-59 lead with 34 seconds to play, but JCSU's Davis got a jumper to fall to provide the 61-61 tie at the end of regulation.
In the extra stanza, the Golden Bulls would grab the 66-62 lead after two
Christian Williams free throws, but WSSU would get a Jared McAllister jumper followed by a dunk from Crandell to pull even for the 13
th time at 66-66.
JCSU would grab the 67-66 lead, but WSSU rattled off four straight points on an Xavier Mills tip-in followed by two Colon free throws that would make it 70-66. Two free throws from Minor cut the WSSU lead to 70-69 with seven seconds remaining but Mills would drain two free throws of his own with six seconds left to provide the 72-69 final as the Golden Bulls potential game-tying three point attempt at the buzzer fell short.
JCSU had three players score 14 points in

Gabon Williams added 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Christian Williams had 11 rebounds for his team-leading fifth double-double of the season.
WSSU got a game-high 26 points from Robert Colon and 19 from William Crandell.
JCSU drops to 8-11 overall, 4-5 in CIAA play and 1-3 in the Southern Division while WSSU jumps to 8-10, 4-5 and 2-2.
The Golden Bulls will continue Southern Division play on Saturday when they host Shaw for a 4:00 p.m. tipoff.
