Box Score Winston-Salem State Earns Last Second Win Over JCSU Women, 58-56
Charlotte, N.C. -- (Jan. 25, 2017) –Jasmine Carter hit a driving layup with 1.6 seconds remaining to lift Winston-Salem State to a 58-56 CIAA Southern Division women's basketball win over Johnson C. Smith University in a sweltering Brayboy Gym on Wednesday night.
The visiting Rams jumped out on the homestanding Golden Bulls by racing to a 10-2 lead. JCSU then got a three pointer from
Malia Rivers (Pageland, S.C.) to cut the deficit to 10-5 with 1:01 to play but WSSU quickly built the lead back to eight points following a three-point play from Taylor Boyd. JCSU's
Anika Jones (Shelby, N.C.) would cap the first quarter scoring with a deep three pointer to bring JCSU to within 13-8.
After JCSU drew to within three points at the 9:56 mark thanks to another basket by Jones, WSSU jumped ahead 17-10 after a pair of free throws from Briana Arnold. The Rams lead would again swell to eight points at 23-15 but JCSU steadily chipped away and eventually tied the game at 28-28 on a Jones layup in traffic as the second quarter ended.
After exchanging the lead twice in the third quarter, JCSU jumped ahead 45-42 after a free throw from senior
Krista White (Dayton, Ohio) at 1:53, a score that would stand through the end of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the two teams again battled through six lead changes. The Golden Bulls grabbed the lead late in the game after Jones canned another three-pointer, putting JCSU ahead 56-54 with 57 seconds left. On the next WSSU possession, Carter drove to the basket and got the tying basket to drop, making it 56-56 with just 35 seconds left.
JCSU had a chance to secure the win, but a turnover led to a WSSU break that allowed Carter to cash in her game winning basket.
Anika Jones led the way for JCSU with a game-high 14 points. She also had a team-high eight rebounds. WSSU's Briana Arnold had 13 points what Taylor Boyd and Carter finished with 12 and 10 points respectively. Both Carter and Arnold had eight rebounds in the win.
The loss drops snaps JCSU's six-game winning streak and drops the Golden Bulls to 14-5 overall, 7-2 in CIAA play and 3-1 in Southern Division games.
WSSU ups their record to 10-9, 6-3 in CIAA play and 4-0 in Southern Divisional play.
The Golden Bulls will round out their three-game home stand on Saturday, Jan. 28 when they host the Shaw Bears at 2:00 p.m.
