Charlotte N.C. (Jan. 9, 2017) – After battling through six ties and three lead changes in the first half, the Johnson C. Smith women's basketball team used a big third quarter to take a 52-35 lead and were never threatened again, taking a 70-54 CIAA win over Virginia State on Monday evening at Brayboy Gym.
After leading 30-27 at halftime, JCSU outscored the Trojans 22-8 in the third quarter. The Golden Bulls used an 11-4 run over the first 6:31 of the quarter to go up 41-31. After VSU trimmed the lead to 41-33, JCSU again put together a run, this time sprinting to a 52-35 lead on an 11-2 run to close the quarter, taking the 52-35 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Golden Bulls were able to hold the Trojans to just 27.3% (15-of-55) shooting on the night while forcing 21 turnovers. JCSU converted those turnovers into 25 points and dominated the play inside, outscoring VSU 44-16 in the paint.
JCSU had four players score in double-figures, led by
Blaire Thomas' (Waterloo, Iowa) 17 points. Thomas would finish 7-of-11 from the field and 2-of-2 from the line in the win. She also brought down five rebounds for JCSU.
Senior
Anika Jones (Shelby, N.C.) finished with 13 points while freshmanÂ
Malia Rivers (Pageland, S.C.) added 12 and a team-high six rebounds.
Monique Hall (Melbourne, Fla.) rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points.
For the Trojans, Tierra Richberg was the only VSU player in double-figures, as she scored a game-high 19 points.
The win improves the Golden Bulls to 10-4 overall and 3-1 in CIAA play while Virginia State drops to 11-4, 3-2 in league play.
JCSU will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 14 for the start of CIAA Southern Divisional play against Fayetteville State. Tipoff with the Broncos is set for 2:00 p.m.
