Golden Bulls Volleyball Drops Hard-Fought Match to Fayetteville State, 3-1
Charlotte, N.C. (Oct. 12, 2017) – In a match that featured 29 ties and 11 lead changes, the visiting Fayetteville State Broncos outlasted the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University by a 3-1 (25-20, 28-26, 22-25, 25-17) score at Brayboy Gym on Thursday night.
Fayetteville State managed to pull away in the first set to take a 25-20 win, but the second set was a back-and-forth affair. Down the stretch, neither team was able to build a lead of more than two points, but FSU took the win after two consecutive JCSU attacking errors.
JCSU was able to rebound in set three, taking the 25-22 win. In the set, JCSU would lead by as many as six points (16-10) but the Broncos rallied to cut the JCSU cushion to 18-16. The Golden Bulls would not surrender the lead the rest of the set, winning 25-22 and narrowing the FSU lead to 2-1.
In set four, tied at 15-15, FSU went on a 10-2 run to close out the match, winning 25-17.
JCSU had two players return double-digit kills, as junior
Anteesha Smoots (San Antonio, Tex.) and
Gorana Bogdanovic (Belgrade, Serbia) each had 10. Bogdanovic also secured 11 digs to post a double-double.
Senior
Azha McNeil (Fayetteville, N.C.) had 30 assists on the night while
Georgina Diaz (Lincolnton, N.C.) led the way with 21 digs.
Fayetteville State got 11 kills from Chynna Hunt and 10 from Nia Bell in the win, as they improved to 14-4 overall, 10-1 in CIAA play and 4-1 in Southern Division play.
JCSU drops to 10-5 on the season, 7-4 in CIAA play and 2-3 in the Southern Division.
