JCSU Women's Basketball Thumps Cheyney in Season Opener, 83-54
Charlotte, N.C. (Nov. 10, 2017) – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team forced 41 turnovers and scored 44 points off those miscues in a 83-54 thumping of visiting Cheyney in the CIAA-PSAC Challenge in Brayboy Gym on Friday night.
The Golden Bulls (1-0) fell behind 2-0 early but took the 3-2 lead on a three-pointer from
Xena Dove (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and never trailed again. JCSU would push the lead to 12 points at 20-8 following a layup in traffic from senior guard
Asha Jordan (Monroe, N.C.) at the 2:14 mark. The lead would balloon to as many as 16 points (24-8) until a three point from Cheyney cut the JCSU lead to 24-13 at the end of the quarter.
Cheyney would trim the JCSU lead to as few as three points (38-35) with 2:59 before the halftime break, but JCSU rebounded to go up 44-37 at the recess.
Following the break, the JCSU offense exploded, outscoring the Wolves 24-4 in the third stanza to take the 68-41 lead.
The Golden Bulls would go up by as many as 34 points (81-47) following an
Autumn West (Durham, N.C.) layup at the 4:23 mark and the Wolves would never get closer than 29 points the rest of the way, as JCSU rolled to the 83-54 win.
Three JCSU players scored in double-figures, with sophomore
Maiya Green (San Antonio, Tex.) leading the way with a game-high 20 points. Green finished 8-of-15 from the field, 2-of-6 from three-point range and 2-of-3 from the line.
Senior teammate
Monique Hall (Melbourne, Fla.) had 16 points and seven assists while sophomore guard
Malia Rivers (Pageland, S.C.) chipped in 12 points. All 11 JCSU players that saw action scored in the contest as the Golden Bulls finished 32-of-67 from the field (47.8%) while limiting Cheyney to a 42% (21-of-50) outing.
The Wolves (0-1) had only one player score in double-figures as Drazana Vulic had a team-best 10 points.
JCSU will round out play in the CIAA-PSAC Challenge on Saturday by hosting Gannon, who downed Elizabeth City State in the early game.
Tipoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
