JCSU Volleyball Falls to Chowan at CIAA Tournament
Petersburg, Va. (Nov. 17, 2017) –The Johnson C. Smith University volleyball team took an early 1-0 lead but fell to Chowan, 3-1 at the CIAA Volleyball Tournament on Friday afternoon at the VSU Multipurpose Center in Petersburg, Va.
JCSU jumped ahead of the Northern Division champion Hawks, running out to a 14-4 lead in set one. Chowan would battle back to close the deficit to 17-14, but JCSU was able to stave off the rally, taking the first set 25-17.
In set two, the Hawks managed an early 10-6 lead only to see the Golden Bulls fight back to tie the set at 14-14. Chowan then went on a run, boosting their lead to 19-15 and never trailed on their way to the 25-18 win.
In the third and fourth sets, Chowan wasted no time and were never threatened, winning the match 3-1.
Individually, JCSU got 10 kills from freshman
Karina Pressoir (Orlando, Fla.) and 27 assists from senior setter
Azha McNeil (Fayetteville, N.C.).
Gorana Bogdanovic (Belgrade, Serbia) managed 16 digs to lead JCSU defensively.
With the loss, the Golden Bulls finish the 2017 season with a 15-9 overall record. Chowan improves to 16-11 on the year and will advance to Saturday's semifinals.
