JCSU Women's Basketball Pounds Paine, 100-57

JCSU Women's Basketball Pounds Paine, 100-57

Charlotte, N.C. (Dec. 3, 2017) – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team had four players score in double-figures and forced visiting Paine College into 28 turnovers in a 100-57 nonconference win on Sunday afternoon at Brayboy Gym.

After battling to an early 11-11 tie, JCSU took a 25-17 lead by the end of the first quarter and outscored the Lions 26-7 in the second frame to take a convincing 51-24 lead at halftime.

The Golden Bulls then pushed their lead to as many as 31 points (67-36) at the 4:09 mark of the third quarter after a Shanice Neita (Toronto, Ontario) basket. Paine then cut the JCSU lead to 26 points (72-46) on a Nyla Murray free throw.  JCSU's Jasmine Carter (Dacula, Ga.) then boosted the JCSU lead to 74-46 with a shot at the 39 second mark, giving the Golden Bulls the 74-46 advantage after three quarters.

In the fourth, JCSU did not let up, going up by 32 points (87-55) after a Maiya Green (San Antonio, Texas) three-pointer.  JCSU closed the game on a 13-2 run capped by a late three-pointer from JaKeyah McNeil (Fayetteville, N.C.) to provide the 100-57 final.

Sophomore Malia Rivers (Pageland, S.C.) led all JCSU scorers, finishing with 23 points. She finished 7-of-9 from the field, 3-of-4 from long range and a perfect 6-of-6 from the line. Rivers also had four steals.

Jasmine Carter had 13 points in her JCSU debut and provided four steals in the win. McNeil added 11 points while Xana Dove (West Palm Beach, Fla.) had 10.

In addition, JCSU shot 49.4% from the field and knocked down seven from distance in the win.  All told, every JCSU player that saw action recorded at least one rebound, with freshman La'Zarea Bowens (Knightdale, N.C.) leading the way with nine boards.  Senior Kendall Adams (Opelika, Ala.) had seven while a quartet of JCSU players have five rebounds each.

The 100 points is the most scored by a JCSU team since the Golden Bulls defeated Glenville State 117-96 on Nov. 14, 2015. It is also the largest margin of victory for a JCSU team under the helm of Stephen Joyner, Jr.

With the win, JCSU improves to 6-2 overall while Paine falls to 0-5.  The Golden Bulls will take the week off for final exams before traveling to take on Catawba on Dec. 11.
