Box Score 2 JCSU Softball Drops Two Games at Lenoir-Rhyne University Bear Bash
Hickory, N.C. (Feb. 10, 2017) – The Johnson C. Smith University softball team dropped a pair of games on the opening day of the Lenoir-Rhyne Bear Bash at Bears Field in Hickory on Friday afternoon.
In game one, JCSU jumped on the host Lenoir-Rhyne Bears, scoring two runs in the first inning when
Kaitlyn Santos (Honolulu, Hi.) laced a double to left-center, scoring senior
Morgan Hasty (Salem, Ind.) and junior
Tia Mahoney (Hartwell, Ga.). Hasty reached base after ripping a double after Mahoney drew a walk.
The Bears would respond in the bottom of the first, plating four runs after getting a triple and two doubles off JCSU pitching while taking the 4-2 lead.
Lenoir-Rhyne would add another run in the second to make it 5-2 and scored five more in the fourth inning to take the 10-2 lead.
After surrendering a leadoff single to junior
Tia Greene (Huntersville, N.C.) in the fifth, the Bears recorded two strikeouts and a foul out to win the game 10-2 in five innings.
Against Lenoir-Rhyne, JCSU's Santos went 1-for-2, finishing with two RBI while Hasty,
Miranda Ricafrente (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Greene also finishing 1-for-2 on the afternoon.
Pitcher
Victoria Lopez (San Diego, Cal.) took the loss, dropping to 1-1 on the season while giving up 10 hits to the Bears.
In game two of the day against Lees-McRae, the Bobcats struck for one run in the third and added a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take the 5-0 lead. JCSU would plate a run in the sixth inning after Hasty ripped a leadoff double. After reaching third on a passed ball, Santos would line a single to left-center, scoring Hasty from third, making it 5-1. After a groundout advance Santos into scoring position at second, a Ricafrente groundout ended the JCSU threat.
LMC added another run in the sixth to go up 6-1 and then ended the game after allowing a two-out walk by forcing Mahoney to ground out.
Against Lees-McRae, JCSU's Hasty led the way, finishing 2-for-3 at the plate while scoring JCSU's lone run.
Tasia Bolling (Leland, N.C.) took the loss in her collegiate debut in the circle, as she allowed six runs on eight hits.
The losses drop JCSU to 1-2 on the season. The Golden Bulls will return to Hickory on Sunday, Feb. 12 to take on UVa-Wise and Concord to complete play in the round-robin event.
