Robert Davis' Career Night Not Enough in JCSU's 117-109 OT Loss at WSSU
Winston-Salem, N.C. -- (Feb. 15, 2017) – Johnson C. Smith University junior guard
Robert Davis scored a career-high 46 points while knocking down nine three-pointers but it was not enough, as the Golden Bulls dropped a 117-109 overtime game to Winston-Salem State at the Gaines Center on Wednesday night.
In the first half, WSSU bolted out to an early 20-11 lead after a T.J. Wilson free throw with 12:42 left. The Golden Bulls battled back, chipping the lead down 26-25 and then took the 28-26 lead after
Christian Williams (Chesapeake, Va.) hit a three-pointer at the 8:15 mark. WSSU then regained the lead and pushed it back to six points (34-28), but again, JCSU would draw to within 36-34 after Davis connected from long range.
The Rams, playing in their final home game, pushed the lead back to nine points (50-41) with 2:09 left and would take a 55-46 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Golden Bulls fought to tie the game at 57-57 after another Davis three-pointer with 18:02 left. Again the Rams would go on a run, extending the lead to as many as 14 points (88-74) with 8:55 to play. JCSU then steadily knocked down the Ram lead, cutting it to just 93-88 with 4::10 to go following a three-pointer from
Gabon Williams (Charlotte, N.C.). After two
Christian Williams free throws brought it to 93-90 at the 3:21 mark, WSSU added two free throws from Robert Colon but Davis converted another jumper to close to within 95-92 with 2:26 to play.
After a WSSU turnover, the Rams would send
Gabon Williams to the free throw line with 1:37 left. After missing the first shot, Williams made the second bringing the Golden Bulls to within 95-93. On the ensuing WSSU possession, Colon drained a three-pointer to make it 96-93 at the 1:09 mark. After WSSU added a free throw to go up 99-93, JCSU freshman
Cayse Minor (Winston-Salem, N.C.) drilled a three-pointer with 37 seconds to play. After the JCSU timeout, the Golden Bulls forced Colon to turn the ball over and Davis connected from long range with 19 second left to knot the score and 99-99.
WSSU would have a chance to go ahead, but JCSU forced a miss and secured the rebound with 1.5 seconds left in regulation. Following a JCSU timeout,
Christian Kirchman's (Roanoke, Va.) long heave was well off the mark, sending the game into overtime tied at 99-99.
In the extra stanza, WSSU jumped out to a nine point lead at 114-105 and was never seriously threatened again, eventually taking the 117-109 win, its second overtime triumph over JCSU this season.
JCSU's Davis put on a show, collecting 46 points on a 13-of-24 shooting outing and going 9-of-15 from three-point range. He also was 11-of 13 from the free throw line, dished seven assists and had six rebounds.Â
Christian Kirchman added 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists on the night.
Gabon Williams had 13 points and eight rebounds while
Christian Williams and
Cayse Minor each finished with 12 points. WSSU had six players secure double-digits, with Ameer Jackson leading the way with 26. Teammate Robert Colon had 22 as the Rams improve to 12-13 overall, 7-8 in CIAA play and 5-4 in Southern Divisional play. JCSU drops to 10-15 overall, 6-9 in CIAA games and 3-6 in the Southern Division.
The Golden Bulls will close the regular season schedule on Saturday, Feb. 18 with a 4:00 p.m. matchup at division-leading Shaw University.
