Fayetteville, N.C. -- (Feb. 4, 2017) –
The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team jumped out to a big first half lead and never trailed, downing Fayetteville State 67-54 to snap a three-game skid in a key CIAA Southern Division game on Saturday afternoon at Capel Arena.

Junior guard Robert Davis (West Friendship, Md.) put the Golden Bulls on top 3-0 but Joshua Dawson quickly responded for the Broncos, hitting three free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt at the 18:45 mark.

Following the 3-3 tie, JCSU's Gabon Williams (Charlotte, N.C.) knocked down and three to put JCSU up 6-3, a lead they would not relinquish as JCSU led for 38:46 of game play. In the opening half, the Golden Bulls enjoyed a lead of as many as 17-points. Williams provided two free throws to put JCSU up 33-16 at the 2:11 mark and at the end of the half, he hit a jumper to provide the 37-20 JCSU lead.

IN the second half, the JCSU lead would never fall below 13 points. FSU's Willie Gilmore scored a laup with 7:44 left to make it 50-37, but JCSU quickly rebuilt the lead, going up by as many as 22 points after Davis canned two free throws with 2:20 to go, making it 65-43. After two Christian Kirchman (Roanoke, Va.) free throws boosted the lead to 67-45 at the 1:20 mark, FSU closed the scoring with two three pointers, the first from Josh Bryant and the latter by Joshua Dawson. Dawson would add a free throw with 21 seconds left to provide the 67-54 final

The Golden Bulls shot 47.8% (22-of-46) from the field and were particularly efficient on the line, going 21-of-23 (91.3%) in the win. The Golden Bulls also controlled the boards, outrebounding the Broncos 36 to 31.

Gabon Williams led the way for JCSU, scoring 21 points on a 6-of-9 shooting effort while hauling in a team-high eight rebounds. Robert Davis added 15 points and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the line while Christian Williams (Chesapeake, Va.) added 12 points in the win. Christian Kirchman also played well, scoring eight points while securing seven rebounds and dishing five assists in the win.

FSU had a trio of players score 12 points. Willie Gilmore, Michael Tyson and Dawson each had adozen for the Broncos with Dawson also going for 11 rebounds, securing the double-double.

The win improves JCSU to 9-13 overall, 5-7 in CIAA play and 2-4 in Southern Division play. Fayetteville State drops to 9-11 overall, 5-7 in CIAA play and 3-3 in Southern Division games.

The Golden Bulls will return home on Wednesday, Feb. 8, taking on St. Augustine's at 7:30 p.m.
