Box Score JCSU Women's Basketball Downs Fayetteville State, 61-55
Fayetteville, N.C.. -- (Feb. 4, 2017) – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team had three players score in double figures to down Fayetteville State 61-55 in CIAA Southern Division action on Saturday afternoon at the Felton J. Capel Arena.
Fayetteville State started quickly in the first quarter, jumping out to a 7-2 lead after a Bronco layup from Chinwendu Maduegbunam at the 8:04 mark. JCSU quickly responded with five straight points to knot the score at 7-7 after
Anika Jones (Shelby, N.C.) got a layup to go with 7:17 left.
The Golden Bulls would then go up 15-9 on another Jones layup at the 3:24 mark but FSU again clawed back to take the 16-15 at 1:14. After JCSU regained the 17-16 lead, FSU got a free throw from Breona Jones to make it 17-17 at the end of the quarter.
After exchanging baskets in the second quarter, JCSU jumped out to a 26-20 lead with 3:27 left after another Jones basket.
Krista White (Dayton, Ohio) would then score four straight points to stake JCSU to the 30-21 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, JCSU pushed the lead to as many as 16 points, the largest for the Golden Bulls at 40-24 following two White free throws. FSU would then go on a 14-4 run to cut the JCSU lead to 42-38 after two Tajah Clark free throws. Another Jones basket put JCSU up 44-38 at the end of the third.
In the fourth quarter the JCSU lead would again swell to 14 points at 53-39. FSU would go on another run, closing to within 57-55 at with 1:03 to play, but JCSU's
Asha Jordan (Monroe, N.C.) hit four free throws down the stretch to provide the 61-55 final.
The Golden Bulls would shoot 50% (22-of-44) on the afternoon and turned in a 15-of-23 (65.2%) output from the free throw line. Jones would finish 9-of-12 on the afternoon and had a game-high 20 points for the Golden Bulls while Jordan finished with 11.
MaryAnna Moore (Laurens, S.C.) finished just shy of a double-double, as she had 10 points and nine rebounds on the afternoon.
Fayetteville State got 19 points from Breona Jones and 10 from De'Aira Smith as the Broncos dropped to 5-16 overall, 3-9 in CIAA play and 1-5 in Southern Division play.
JCSU improves to 16-6 overall, 9-3 in CIAA play and 5-1 in Southern Division play.
The Golden Bulls will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 8, hosting Southern Divisional foe St. Augustine's University in a 5:30 p.m. tipoff at Brayboy Gym.
