Box Score 2 Victoria Lopez Hurls No-Hitter as JCSU Sweeps Shaw in Doubleheader
Raleigh, N.C. (April 2, 2017) – Johnson C. Smith University senior pitcher
Victoria Lopez threw a no-hitter in game one of a CIAA doubleheader and the Golden Bulls posted 12 hits in game two to earn a sweep of Shaw University on Sunday afternoon in Raleigh.
In game one, the Golden Bulls took control early, scoring two runs in each of the first two innings to claim a 4-0 lead. JCSU also put up five runs in the fifth inning, with freshman
Randasia Daniels (Shallotte, N.C.) providing a two-RBI single. Daniels hit came after junior
Tia Mahoney (Hartwell, Ga.) hit her first home run of the season, which was a solo shot.
Lopez, had a masterful game in the circle, retiring 16 of the 17 batters she faced while fanning four to earn her sixth win of the year in the 9-0 win over the Bears
Offensively, senior
Morgan Hasty (Salem, Ind.) went 2-for-3 at the plate including her team-leading seventh double of the year.
In game two, JCSU scored in every inning except the second in taking the 10-0 win. Hasty again provided the offensive spark, going 3-for-3 with a two-run home run, her third round-tripper of the year. Sophomore
Kaitlin Santos (Honolulu, Hi.) also had a great outing, going 3-for-4 while driving in three. Daniels and Mahoney each had a triple in game two, with Daniels going 3-for-4 with two RBI with Mahoney driving in one.
Lopez also got the pitching win in game two, upping her record to 7-5 on the season.
The sweep improves JCSU to 11-12 overall, 6-4 in CIAA play and 2-2 in the Southern Division while Shaw drops to 6-23, and 4-6 in CIAA play and 2-2 in Southern Division play. JCSU will next travel on April 8, playing at Southern Division rival Winston-Salem State. JCSU will then return home on April 9 to battle Fayetteville State.
