JCSU Women Dumps Rival Livingstone, 81-49

JCSU Women Dumps Rival Livingstone, 81-49

Charlotte, N.C. (Jan. 24, 2018) –
The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team used pressure defense into forcing 31 turnovers against rival Livingstone and had every player score as the Golden Bulls took an 81-49 CIAA Southern Division win on Wednesday night at Brayboy Gym.

Leading just 15-11 after the end of the first, JCSU revved up the pressure and outscored the visiting Blue Bears 30-8 in the second quarter to blow open the game and take a commanding lead.  JCSU used a 22-4 run and held the Blue Bears scoreless for nearly four minutes while building the sizeable cushion.

In the third quarter, JCSU's lead would expand to as many as 36 points (63-27) at the 4:03 mark following a jumper from sophomore Maiya Green (San Antonio, Tex.). The Blue Bears would get no closer than 26 points the remaining of the third quarter and would never get the JCSU lead to below 30 points in the fourth quarter, as JCSU took the lopsided win.

Every Golden Bull that logged action scored, with Malia Rivers (Pageland, S.C.) leading the way with 15 points. Fellow sophomore Jamia Johnson (Durham, N.C.) managed 13 points and eight rebounds while junior Jasmine Carter (Dacula, Ga.) had a team-high 10 rebounds and seven points.

As a team, JCSU managed a 39.7% (29-of-73) shooting percentage on the night, while the Blue Bears returned a 24.2% outing, going 15-of-62.

JCSU dominated play inside, outscoring LC 30-20 in the paint and had a decisive advantage in bench points, outscoring them 43-21 in the win.

The win improves JCSU to 12-6 overall, 4-3 in CIAA play and 2-1 in the Southern Division while Livingstone drops to 5-13, 0-8 and 0-3.
