JCSU Falls to Tuskegee, 74-70
Charlotte, N.C. (Jan. 8, 2018) – Visiting Tuskegee held the Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team to just 37.9% from the field and held on to take a 74-70 win on Monday night in Brayboy Gym.
The Golden Tigers started strong, bolting out to a 28-12 lead in the first half and would never trail the rest of the game.
JCSU was able to close to within 12 points (40-28) by the end of the first half, but another big Tuskegee run pushed the Golden Tigers to lead to 20 points (52-32) at the 15:04 mark of the second half.
JCSU would work their way back into it, cutting the TU lead to just three points (71-68) with 45 seconds remaining and had a chance to cut further into the lead following a turnover and steal from
Roddric Ross (Forest City, N.C.), but his three-pointer was off the mark. Tuskegee then upped the lead to 74-68 by hitting 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch. JCSU would get a late layup, but it was not enough, Tuskegee took the 74-70 win.
Individually, JCSU got a game-high 18 points from senior
Robert Davis (West Friendship, Md.). Davis was perfect from the free throw line (6-of-6) but was just 6-of-24 from the field. Ross finished with a double-double for JCSU, scoring 15 points and hauling in 10 rebounds.Â
Arthur Bennett (Powder Springs, Ga.) chipped in 13 points, while sophomoreÂ
Cayse Minor (Winston-Salem, N.C.) had nine points and 10 rebounds on the night.
Tuskegee was led by Travis Flagg and Myles Thomas, with each scoring 15 points. Daniel Roach had 14 while James Eads finished with 12 points for the Golden Tigers.
JCSU will next turn their focus back to CIAA play, as the Golden Bulls (8-6) will travel to Virginia State on Wednesday, Jan. 10 for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
