JCSU Volleyball swept by Shaw

Golden Bulls miss opportunity to tie for Division lead

RALEIGH, NC - Johnson C. Smith University's Volleyball Team rolled into Spaulding Gymnasium looking to move into a tie for first place in the CIAA Southern Division. However Shaw University, undefeated in conference play, had other ideas as the Lady Bears swept the Golden Bulls 3-0 Wednesday evening.

The first regular season matchup between the two top teams in the division went all Shaw's way (24-26, 3-25, 22-25) handing JCSU (13-7 | CIAA:10-3) its third conference loss and second loss in the division.

In the first set, JCSU jumped out to a 6-1 lead and maintained that lead until Shaw fought back to tie the score at 23 all.

Kills by Shaw's Keveesha Wattley surrounding a JCSU service area pushed the Lady Bears to a 26-24 first set win.

The second set saw JCSU's worst offensive output of the season as they only scored three points, falling 25-3.

The final set was much more competative.  Shaw took a 6-1 early lead.  Nine ties later (19-19) Shaw outscored JCSU 6-3 to close out the match 25-22.

With the win, Shaw improves to 16-6, CIAA: 12-0.

JCSU was led by  Gorana Bodganovic with five kills and eight service aces.  Joi Haywood recorded nine digs while Cydney Calhoun contributed seven assists.

With the loss, the Golden Bulls fall into a second place tie with Winston-Salem State with Fayetteville State a half game behind in fourth.

The top four teams in each division will qualify for the CIAA Volleyball Championship Tournament.

JCSU returns to action Saturday, Oct. 20 when they travel to Orangeburg, S.C. to face Claflin University.  First serve is set for 2:00 p.m.
