Chowan Snaps JCSU's School Record Winning Streak at the Buzzer, Wins 82-81

Chowan Snaps JCSU's Winning Streak at the Buzzer, Wins 82-81

Murfreesboro, N.C. (Feb. 12, 2018) – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team erased a 12-point deficit late in the second half but Chowan got a put-back from Demetrius Sanders with 0.3 seconds left to win 82-81, snapping the Golden Bulls' school record, nine-game winning streak on Monday night at the Helms Center in Murfreesboro, N.C.

Trailing 78-66 with 4:52 to play, JCSU put together a 15-2 run to grab the 81-80 lead with 1:01 to play after senior Christian Kirchman (Roanoke, Va.) tapped in a miss by Robert Davis (West Friendship, Md.).

JCSU looked to be in control when on the next Chowan possession, the Hawks were whistled for a travelling call, turning the ball back over to the Golden Bulls with 48 seconds left.

JCSU then had a three-pointer blocked, but was able to corral the rebound with 20 seconds left.  Davis had to hoist a three to beat the shot clock, which was off the mark and controlled by the Hawks Tim Hewitt.

Chowan then came down the floor and Robert Grubbs missed a three pointer with three seconds left, but Demetrius Sanders controlled the rebound and got the put-back to fall at the buzzer to send the Golden Bulls to their first defeat since an 89-80 setback on Jan. 10 at Virginia State.

Davis led JCSU with 23 points, his 36th consecutive game scoring in double-figures. He also managed four assists and two steals.  Kirchman also had a stellar outing, garnering 19 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in the loss.

Fellow senior Arthur Bennett (Powder Springs, Ga.) had 11 points and brought down seven rebounds. As a team, JCSU shot 49.2% from the floor and 30.4% from long range.  JCSU also managed a 66.7% effort from the line in the loss.

Chowan got a career-high 29 points from Sanders. He also finished with nine rebounds.  Tim Hewett had 19 while Robert Grubbs rounded out the Hawks double-digit scorers with 16.

JCSU drops to 17-8 overall and 10-3 in CIAA play while Chowan improves to 9-13 and 4-9 in league play.

The Golden Bulls will look to bounce back this upcoming Saturday, Feb. 17 when they head to rival Livingstone for a 4:00 tipoff from Trent Gym in Salisbury, N.C.
