JCSU Mourns the Loss of Former Tennis Coach Dr. William "Bill" Madrey
Charlotte, N.C. (Feb. 14, 2018) - Former Johnson C. Smith University Tennis Coach Dr. William "Bill" Madrey passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018.
Madrey coached several top-ranked tennis programs and players not only at JCSU, but also at St. Augustine's University and Barber Scotia College. A nationally known tennis coach and advocate, he truly loved all of his tennis players and the tennis community. In addition to his tennis coaching ability, he served as an assistant men's basketball coach at JCSU and later served as a high school football coach and girls' soccer coach with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Later, he served as athletic director and professor at Barber Scotia College in Concord, N.C.Â
In 1994, he moved to Winston-Salem, N.C. where he finished his professional career as an earth science teacher at Glenn High School, retiring in 2010.
A member of United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church since 1994, he served as a member of the Transportation Ministry and was active in the Cub Scouts and the Boy Scouts of America as a Troop Leader for Troop 916.

Funeral services for Dr. William Madrey, Jr. will be held at Noon on Thursday, February 15, 2018, at United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, 450 Metropolitan Drive, Winston-Salem, N.C.
Family hour begins at 11:00 a.m. at the church and will be preceded by the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Memorial Service at 10:30 a.m.
The family will receive friends at Russell Funeral Home, 822 Carl Russell Drive in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Wednesday, February 14, from 5:00-7:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church Endowment Scholarship Fund in memory of William Madrey, Jr.
