Golden Bulls Softball Takes Two From Rochester College
Charlotte, N.C. (March 10, 2018) – The Johnson C. Smith University softball team earned their first two wins of the season after sweeping visiting Rochester College by 10-8 and 12-1 scores on Saturday afternoon at Biddleville Park.
After falling down 7-4 in game one, JCSU exploded for six runs in the fifth inning. In the frame, back-to-back doubles from
Sanae Nakoa (Maui, Hawai'i) and
Kaitlin Santos (Honolulu, Hawai'i) resulted in Nakoa racing home for the first run of the inning.Â
Evelyn Arguelles (Deltona, Fla.) singled home Santos, then
Randasia Daniels (Shallotte, N.C.) singled, putting runners on the corners.
Senior
Tia Greene (Huntersville, N.C.) got into the action as she ripped a double, driving in Arguelles. After a
Shenice Harrison (Leland, N.C.) groundout drove in Greene, JCSU got RBI singles from
Daija Williams (Miami, Fla.) and
Alexis D'Louhy (Winnabow, N.C.) to push the Golden Bull lead to 10-7.
The Warriors were able to push across a run in the sixth, but JCSU allowed nothing else, taking the 10-8 win, their first of the season.
JCSU's
Tatyana Mars (Fayetteville, N.C.) got the pitching win, improving to 1-2 on the season.
In game two, JCSU handled the Warriors, scoring two in the first and seven in the third to go up 9-0. In the big inning, JCSU ripped Rochester for five hits and were aided by two errors. After Rochester got one back in the fourth, Nakoa launced a solo homer to left center, her first of the season, to give JCSU the 10-1 lead. JCSU would score two more in the inning and were able to retire the Warriors in the fifth for the 12-1 win.
JCSU's
Tia Mahoney (Hartwell, Ga.) had a great second game, rapping out two triples while Nakoa went 2-for-2 with a home run while driving in two. In all seven Golden Bulls had RBI in the game.
Freshman
Daijaa Williams earned her first career pitching win, allowing one run while scattering five hits and striking out five.
JCSU improves to 2-6 on the season with the sweep. JCSU will jump into CIAA play this upcoming Friday, March 16, when they travel to Elizabeth City, N.C. for the CIAA Softball Roundup.
