JCSU Softball Splits Twinbill With Winston-Salem State

Charlotte, N.C. (April 14, 2018) – The Johnson C. Smith University softball team used an offensive explosion and held on to take a 13-9 win over Winston-Salem State in game two of a CIAA doubleheader at Biddleville Park on Saturday, earning a split with the Rams.

After spotting the Rams a 5-0 lead after the top of the first, JCSU made it 5-2 when Tia Mahoney (Hartwell, Ga.) launched her first homer of the season, a two-run shot over the right field fence in the home half of the first.

After holding the Rams scoreless in the second inning, JCSU plated four runs to take the 6-5 lead.  After JCSU loaded the bases, WSSU walked in a run, then JCSU manufactured a run on a fielder's choice. After Evelyn Arguelles (Deltona, Fla.) delivered an RBI single, a WSSU error allowed the Golden Bulls to plate another run, taking the 6-5 lead.

The Golden Bulls struck for five runs in the third inning, boosting the lead to 11-5. Arguelles delivered the big hit again, this time a two-run double to left field.

The Rams made it interesting in the latter stages of the game, scoring two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to make it 11-9.  The Golden Bulls responded with a pair of runs in the sixth and closed the game by retiring the Rams in the seventh to grab the 13-9 win.

In game one, WSSU wasted little time, jumping to a 3-0 lead after the first and then exploded for nine runs in the fourth to grab to the 13-0 lead.  JCSU was able to scratch across a run in the fifth to avoid the shutout.

Following the split, JCSU now stands at 7-15 overall, 5-7 in CIAA play and 2-4 in the Southern Division while WSSU is now 7-22, 5-5 in league play and 2-2 in the division.
